Using that logic, people pay $$$ for a Ferrari and they can’t even drive it in the snow. One would think for $$$ it should be a snow mobile.
I7guy I'm usually with you on these arguments but what the hell are you talking about. Don't tell me it's like driving a Ferrari on snow, as that is a use case that has nothing to do with how the vehicle is marketed and the target audience to which it's sold. Please explain how using data on a mobile phone is so "out there" in the same way that driving a Ferrari on the snow is. Ffs it's literally 1 of 3 main ways for the phone to connect and get/send data.

look I'm not an android fan either but you're wildly grasping at some straws here. The fact that they compete with Speedtest makes everything invalid? Wtf??????

If it was Apple getting the best speeds, a lot of people would be bragging about it. If I paid $400 for my phone, I wouldn't have much to say but we paid $1,000 for this ****. Premium prices. We should be getting the most of out of our tech, not accepting less and thanking Apple for it.
The post struck me as a strawman in bold, (hyperbolic)response in kind.;)

The takeaway I got from this report: just like real estate, it’s mostly about location.

What exactly are the benefits? Is it gonna help me tweet faster or post that image to Instagram faster?
Yeah it will generally help apps like Instagram(which have live feeds or refresh information every time you open them) open and run faster and smoother which in the end improves user experience.

A superior modem is more noticeable in edge cases, when reception is not great and with some phones you barely get enough signal to make a phone call.

Well Apple use intel modems in iPhones sold in the UK so android phones with Qualcomm chips will have faster download speeds. This has been shown already. If it actually matters in the grand scheme of things.
The Qualcomm chips are faster overall in speed and connectivity. Side by side my Pixel 3XL and S10 Plus have faster download speeds than my Xs Max. It has been this way for a few years.
It only really matters if you are gaming or downloading movies or bigs files.

Not sure how hilarious it is, but do you think it has anything to do with the relatively large area that carriers have to cover? The US is somewhat large, comparatively.
Large and with old systems.
Im not sure what people are downloading on their phones but this is part of the push
to depopulate the world with 5G...get ready for the big experiment

I'm always shocked to see how ridiculously expensive mobile services are in the USA. 80 dollars per month? 90 dollars per month? WHAT?!

I pay 25 euros ($28) per month for unlimited phone calls, unlimited texts and virtually unlimited 4G data. The only 'limit' I have on my data is that I can use 5GB per day, before it stops (to prevent misuse) but I can reactivate another GB by one click on a button in my carrier's app for free. If that gigabyte runs out I can get another one by repeating that, and another one, and another one..

So basically it is unlimited 4G. And i have never used more than 5GB on one day. So for me it is absolutely perfect.
Well the telecom companies have convinced people that this is normal. And the US is a large area.
I live in Maine here in the US which about twice the size of the Netherlands.
Not sure how we can roll back the prices..to many politicians in the telecoms pockets.

It also matters in edge cases when phones with Qualcomm modems are barely fast enough to surf the web. How would an iphone behave in those cases?

This all comes down to which company paid the writer and the tester to sway the data to one side or another .

I find it hilarious that the US (arguably the wealthiest country in the world), which has expensive internet and mobile plan prices is so slow.

Large territory to cover, and very low density in many parts of the country. I can drive for hours in TX without seeing a single human.

In the UK 4G was soooooo fast when it first launched. I’d almost always get 100mbps+ download AND upload. But now everyone else is on 4G it sucks.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the faster countries have low populations.

Agreed. Statistics can provide incredible insight, but are also inherently misleading without sufficient context. In this case, you're correct that population size, population density, cell tower density, back-haul connectivity, and many other factors play into the "speed" number but are not accounted for here.

How's the coverage for t-mobile? I'm moving into a new home soon and I have to switch to Ziggo to get a respectable internet speed there. Which means I'll lose the most valuable pro for KPN: double data. So I'm most likely switching to t-mobile once I'm due for a new contract.

Tele2 has been taken over by TMobile a couple of months ago, so if you're smart you get the 25 euro per month unlimited everything subscription that I have, because eventually Tele2 customers will be able to use the Tmobile network. Tmobile offers the same unlimited contract for 35 euro per month, with only slightly higher speeds i believe (and a better network) Tmobile has been rated the best 4G network a couple of times, so you'll be fine. Ziggo has the basic monopoly in many cities, so it's either Ziggo or some slow weird provider. Don't subscribe to Vodafone (eventhough Vodafone and Ziggo have merged) because their service is HORRIBLE.

Well The Netherlands used to have FIVE different operators with FIVE independent networks.

Dutchtone, Ben, KPN, Telfort and Libertel.

Ben was bought by Deutsche Telekom, was renamed T-Mobile and later took over Orange
Dutchtone became Orange and later merged with T-Mobile
KPN bought Telfort
and Libertel was bought by Vodafone and renamed after the latter.

So 5 providers, competing with each other in a super tiny country = lower prices.

Now after the mergers the prices slowly started to increase, and unlimited data became limited again, and stupid additional costs like 'aansluitkosten' (one time activation/connecting costs) were re-introduced.

Then Tele2 bought one of the 4G licences and shocked everybody by suddenly offering unlimited 4G internet for only 25 euro per month. Immediately prices started to drop again, but unfortunately (and amid much protest) the takeover of Tele2 by T-Mobile has been approved and even though T-Mobile was forced to keep at least the prices what they are for the next 3 years (set aside inflation corrections) but after that they are free to do whatever they want.

So i can already predict that in three years from now I will receive a letter saying that 'due to cost increases and to optimise our services for you, we are forced to increase our prices to XX amount per month'

If you paid $1000 for your iPhone you are getting the most out of it. Buried in the middle of the article is that the phones were divided into three tiers. The highest tier phones were very close across all brands.

In the UK (and other European countries) you will probably find Exynos Samsungs meaning that not only Qualcomm's modems beat intel's but that Samsungs offerings also don't have any problem stepping over them.

Are those number from the same carriers or different ones?
Samsung or not samsung are the same on Sprint network haha. All slow as hell

We go hiking in the mountains where there is little to no cellular service. My GF uses a Pixel 3 XL. If i have my Xs Max that day...she typically can send/receive texts messages but my Xs Max has no service. We are both on Verizon.
I even reboot my iphone to try to get better service. But I can pop the Verizon sim card out of my iPhone and put it my Pixel 3 XL and send/receive text messages.

Lot more terrain and urban population to cover in the US

That does not relate to this topic in anyway shape or form...

A straw man is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent. One who engages in this fallacy is said to be "attacking a straw man".

Damn you Apple, thats nearly a whole second a year I've wasted waiting for my data to download. Thats a whole second of my life that I'm never going to get back  Oh No, wait... I'm in the UK and there is no clear winner here so I apologise Apple, I take it all back, all is good in the world again.

well t least your data lasts longer with an iPhone!!
