It's mostly for the amusing effect, nonetheless a lot of drunkards and a few drug dealers fill that area, at least the last time I was there. It doesn't intimidate me but it does to some people especially if you're alone visiting at night. It can, however, be an interesting spectacle of the human condition.

Ah, definitely.
I certainly put away my DSLR and buttoned away my cleavage. And indeed I'm not sure I'd have walked down that alley at night. The main streets are good fun in the evenings though. Beautiful, even. 
They sure are and it's the only capital I visited when midday sitting in a terrace of a bar in the center of the city you can hear birds chirping.
All my friends are going the week before and I had already booked a weekend in Dublin, so unfortunately I'm doing this one solo. It was either Amsterdam by myself or Paris with 2 other guys, but I really would rather visit Amsterdam.
