Realized after they arrived that having my last name on airtags and putting them on a key ring is a mistake as someone finding it can now find which apartment I live in! Probably impossible to buff that engraving off I think. Should I try to sell them?

There is also the other side to this. What if you misplace the item the airtag is attached to and it happens to be in a place or area that friends, neighbours and work collegues know who you are. The see the name on the airtag, the realise they know who the item belongs to and thus if the item is small enough they put it through your letterbox or they message you directly.

Use them on something other than a key ring. I'd expect being personalized will hurt their value.
Put them in that fully sealed case with screws?

It’s plastic. You can probably wet sand then with a high grit block or paper and still retain a decent finish. Although I havent seen engraved ones in person. Are the letters raised or is it actually engraved into the plastic? If it’s raised my suggestion would work fine.
I thought they were stainless steel? Also it wouldn’t be engraving if it was raised would it?

The engraving is on the plastic side. In my opinion more a print than an engraving.

Apartment/Condo building, there could be a directory...or people know who lives in which apartment. Or, perish the thought, you have an actual listed number (do they even make phone books anymore?) 🙂 and the finder makes an educated guess.
As others have said, simply don't use the engraved ones for keys.
The side that’s “engraved” it plastic. Which from the photos looks like raised lettering.

I got my name engraved on mine.
If my keys get lost, and it's close enough that someone could figure out where I live based off of my name, it's close enough that someone could steal my car by simply walking around the block listening for a car to go beep when you click the lock button. They could also use that to open my garage door, stealing everything in my house. At that point, does it really matter if they know my first name?

Maybe the Op's last name isn't as generic as Smith or Jones (as it seems, from the test I did, that you're limited to 5 characters?)

No, but I also live out in the suburbs, where my neighbors may know my name, or could figure it out easily enough.
Value?
They have virtually no second hand value.
Once brought they’re worth all but zero bucks on the second hand market given that you can buy them new for $30.
People who engrave their name on AirTags: Are all your last names six (?) letters maximum long, or is there an engraving option for more letters than that I miss?
