Stupid question RE Airport Extreme...

Is the Airport Extreme base station a router as well? Or do I need a separate one for port forwarding, etc?

Yes it is a router. It is a wireless router with a 3 port switch. It isn't the best at port forwarding, but I guess it depends what you are doing.
