Here is a stupid question What is the difference between a notebook and a laptop? Is there one. I grew up calling any portable computer a "laptop".
 
Same thing. "Notebook" is preferred because they're so hot now 'laptop' will toast your goodies.

Roasted nuts do have a rather niche market.

I personally think "notebook" became more popular after students began buying laptops en masse.
