Dummy me left a wifi only ipad in airplane mode on an airplane. It has been 3 weeks and no sign of it in airport lost and found. Numerous phone calls and use of Delta's online site. Hasn't shown up on my icloud. I think it's lost.

I'm trying to decide what to replace it with. It is basically a movies device for my kid at this point. Nobody uses it for much else. The wife does a little web browsing on it occasionally but that is about it. I know the ipad 2 is long in the tooth, but the price is right and for limited use I'm thinking about it, but I'm assuming ios 8 will be the last IOS upgrade for it, and considering getting a 4 or air for "future proof"-ing but not even sure if that is worth the extra cost.

I've found old 64GB Ipad 2's with AT&T for <$300 in good shape. A used Air in decent shape with AT&T is twice that.

New or even refurb pricing is absurd for the use it will have.

TLDR: Would you still buy an ipad 2 for a limited use device?

Why can't you wait until October 16 announcement? If new iPads are announced that day, your options become so much wider. At the least, if you still want an older iPad you might be able to go out that day and grab a firesale iPad3 or 1st-gen rMini since the vendors may be unloading them at steep discounts.

Wait a few more days, I say.

iPad 2 just doesn't cut it any more. The outdated CPU/hardware performance and the terrible camera (altho that may not be important for your iPad use). Remember it has that legacy 32-pin port, not the newer Lightning. I could list a couple more things lacking about iPad2, but I say…. just wait until Oct 16

I would agree with the fact it would be a bit silly to pay any price for an iPad 2, but saying it doesn't cut it is not true. iPad 2s are still very good tablets.

Just got it back yesterday. Looks great! Just like when I lost it. Runs IOS 7 really well. I think I'll rock it on IOS 7 until I can't run the apps I want/need and then upgrade to something more modern. With it's limited use, that could still be a while!
