Suddenly no volume on Powerbook

Suddenly there's no volume on my Powerbook today (1.25Ghz, 15" running 10.3.8). And there seems to be a 2 second lag between pressing the volume keys and seeing the adjustment graphic on screen - no such issue with adjusting brightness.

Any idea what might be wrong and what can be done?

Try repairing your permissions then restarting. That usually clears up my volume issues.

Thanks for the tip...tried it though, and it didn't help 🙁
