My brother in law is one of those typical losers who downloads music all the time, and that makes me seriously mad. Of course, he ignores all my 'downloading music is a crime' warnings, and honestly I've given up on him.
Just to be clear, copyright infringement is a civil offense, not a criminal one. That's why these people are being sued rather than arrested.

I pay the DSL bill.. So if someone did sue us, would the notice come to me, in my name?
It's your network, which makes you responsible for each bit going in and out. If you want to curb his piracy, do something other than tell him to stop.

they will go after you because you own the dsl. even if you can show that he downloaded the stuff you are in trouble. because you knew he's stealing and you willingly tolerated or even supported it.

they will not arrest you or sue you for millions. they will settle for $100. but the fact that you will need a lawyer to get out of this will cost you 1000 bucks or more.

block your wireless, if necessary use a cable to your router. if you can then get rid of the dsl for 2 month.

get rid of the guy a.s.a.p..

Your freeloading brother-in-law seems to think he is like Boris in that James Bond movie where he goes "I am Invincible!!" then gets frozen solid. Just set your connection so it only goes to this site.

What you should do is sitch DSL, get cable ('cause if the MPAA ever picked up on the torrent use, even after your B-I-L is gone, they might still go after you...) then kick his lazy drunken ass out. Tell him to go bittorrent in a coffeeshop and live in a box.

Thanks for all the responses.. well I did warn him about not downloading movies, and he stopped for a bit, and now he's started again. The point is, that I can't kick him out. Its a family thing, and besides, I'm not the type of person to kick out a person anyway. I'd rather change some router settings so he can't connect to P2P hosts as a few people have explained.

I travel most of the time, and I have a Cingular data card (with the $80 per month plan) for use with my AMD laptop, but when I'm home, of course I use the DSL with my macbook. And recently, I discovered much to my anger, that my surfing speed was reduced to 42.5 kbps. I went to his room and he was using Limewire with a million downloads going on. Of course, when I turned his limewire off, my speed was back to normal.

I do have access to the dsl router settings (my login and pass) How do i block his access to Limewire? I can then rub my hands in glee and watch as he can't connect :p

Now that one is definitely blocking TCP 6346 in both directions :)

Thats what I meant to say instead of his IP address.

How do i find out his MAC address? I'll go in his room when he's not there.. and what do I do? (its a pc) Or can i access his mac address without accessing his computer?

My dslrouter has the MAC filtering option.

On a PC you open up the Command Prompt (Start button>Run>the type "cmd"), then you run the "ipconfig /all" command. You may also be able to get it off your router's DHCP table though depending on the make.

Another method is to find out which IP address he's using, and do an ARP request from your Mac. Open up your Terminal, and use the "arp <ip address>" command.

For example

[iMac:~] dynamicv% arp 192.168.0.1
? (192.168.0.1) at 0:9:5b:da:4:d8 on en1 [ethernet]

Like the one returned above, the MAC address may need some 0's added to put it in the standard format. 0:9:5b:da:4:d8 is normally written 00:09:5b:da:04:d8

Thanks dynamicv, i just got his mac address from my router setting though! :D Lol, i've never done this before and i sound so excited

I think I did it! I set the firewal too 'high' to block everything except web, mail, and some other stuff.. and BAM! My speed is back to 2500 kbps.. so doing that probably blocked his limewire/kazaa crap. Just to test it, i set the firewall to 'none' and my speed went down to 350 kbps.. then back to 'high' and its 2500 kbps :D

Will know for sure tomorrow, if his limewire really can't connect or i'm just hallucinating hehe!

Excellent stuff. If you PM me your e-mail address and your ISP name, I'll spoof you an e-mail from their support department stating how they now block Peer 2 peer traffic. That way you can throw him off the scent and pretend it's not you doing it :D
