Suggestions regarding sound alert failure

The alert sounds in Mail and iChat aren't working. I have reset the .plist for both apps to no avail. In iChat, when I test the alert sound it works, but not when using the app. Any suggestions? I use 10.4.5 on a G4 iBook. Thanks.

Maybe try resetting some core audio settings by opening and closing Garageband. This is of course assuming you have the Alert Sounds volume unmuted in System Preferences.

Thanks, mj. It's unmuted in system peferences. I opened and closed garageband as suggested. Still no sounds with iChat. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

did you also lose sounds for emptying trash, taking screenshots, etc? This problem happens to me every few days, the only apparent fix is a restart. The sound effects just disappear, i'd love a real solution to this problem.
