Suggestions regarding sound alert failure

The alert sounds in Mail and iChat aren't working. I have reset the .plist for both apps to no avail. In iChat, when I test the alert sound it works, but not when using the app. Any suggestions? I use 10.4.5 on a G4 iBook. Thanks.

Maybe try resetting some core audio settings by opening and closing Garageband. This is of course assuming you have the Alert Sounds volume unmuted in System Preferences. 🙂

Thanks, mj. It's unmuted in system peferences. I opened and closed garageband as suggested. Still no sounds with iChat. 😕 Thanks for the suggestion, though.🙂

did you also lose sounds for emptying trash, taking screenshots, etc? This problem happens to me every few days, the only apparent fix is a restart. The sound effects just disappear, i'd love a real solution to this problem.
