Anyone remember AirMessage? Idk if it still exists, maybe I just dated myself a bit.
Not at all—it’s estimated it will grow to 3.5 billion (from 3 billion) users per month by the end of this year.
SMS, I can send and receive messages, I don't need anything else.
I know the differences, RCS can send higher quality video, photos and whatever other rubbish people want to send, which is not possible to send with SMS anyway, that is MMS.
Suits me, I don't want people to send me that stuff anyway.
RCS also have encryption, but not always, if using the carrier version of RCS, they may not support encryption. Not that I have messages that need encryption.
But RCS is not going as planned, is it? RCS was supposed to be supported by carriers, just like SMS, but it has not happened to any great amount. Google is the middle man so to speak in the majority of it. The GSM Association wanted networks to support it, but it seems to have changed to a Google thing because without Google sticking it in their messages app and providing the service, RCS would be dead in the dead in the water.
People seem to use Whatsapp for messaging these days, not that I do, again, I have no reason for a service like that.
In the U.K, only 2 networks support it, EE and 3 and 3 is now part for Vodafone, so I doubt it will stay for long and on the Iphone RCS encryption is only beta on those networks.
So I know what RCS is and what SMS/MMS is, I use a app for SMS/MMS that don't support RCS, I don't like Google messages app and since i have no need for RCS, I see no reason to change.
Snapchat is an absolute privacy nightmare—it tracks everything. Further, Snap isn’t doing great financially because it’s losing users in the US and Europe. It’s not failing, per se, but it’s not in a good spot (less than 500 million daily active users; they don’t report monthly active users). My guess is it will be gone within a decade (either it eventually folds or Meta buys it and moves everyone to Insta). It’s not reliable.
My sister and her family use it, it suits them as they have a family group, I presume her kids got my sister and her hubby into it.
I used to get people messaging me to install WhatsApp, I never saw the point, if they want to message me, then use SMS, email or phone me. If they really needed to, use Facebook messaging, I only keep that on my phone for a couple of people.
Thankfully, people seem to have given up trying to get me to use Whatsapp, text these days, certainly in the U.K is part of a package and for the majority of people it is unlimited, so no extra cost.

For many across the world, SMS is still a paid service. I work with immigrant communities who find WhatsApp an absolute godsend. They're only leaving that app if something amazingly better comes along and WhatsApp is suddenly (and literally) on fire.

This. I’m not about to deal with the headache of getting my mom, dad, aunt, grandma, etc. on WhatsApp for what exact gain? Texting doesn’t need to be fancy and if it does I’ll use an array of other apps.

And, yes, I remember it, too. It works (worked? The site is still up, but there's no SSL cert) much the way I think Sunbird has things set up, but, in AirMessage's case, you had to have a Mac running their client, which then relayed it to your phone.
And it came out in 2019—you didn't date yourself that much.
The only people that would rage out would be iPhone users, who would no longer be able to feel superior to Android people.
