Super slow airport express -- to old?

So I've got an Airport Express, which has treated me in a lovely manner, despite some initial hiccups. I've had it for 4 years now, and the past few days, it has started really slowing to molasses.

For example, speedtest.net confirmed my suspicions that it's super slow, revealing a download speed of .84Mb/s and upload of .19Mb/s and pings at 1417ms. A secondary test was a hair speedier at 1.31Mb/s and .03Mb/s and a ping of 1917ms.

Some troubleshooting I've tried:

• Reset the modem
• Reset the router
• Test a direct connection, which was around 50x faster
• Use iStumbler to check the channels of other networks
• Check different channels

Am I missing something? Has my AE just crapped out on me after our long relationship?

It is just old. Get an AirPort Extreme or comparable wireless router.

Unplug the AE and then restart.

Get yourself one of those new Extreme's with simultaneous dual band.

you could try re-flashing the firmware, and then setting it up again, might help might not, but at least you'd only be out 10 minutes of time.
