It doesn't concern you that it can't power a hard drive or even a couple of extremely low power peripherals? No point in having two use ports in that case and might as well get the Apple one which is known to work.

I am not worried about powering an external 2.5 drive. I cannot say the last time I did it. Flash drives yes that would be super important.

I got mine last week from eBay. Looks exactly the same but almost half the price I think.
Took a month to get get it but it works very well.
Used it with an external hdd and Elgato dtt TV without any hiccups.
Nicely made. Very pleased.
I managed without before because the rMB battery is good enough for my use but in some situations (long time machine back up or long TV session) it is nice to have.

Another strange thing happened though: my battery health jumped from 91% to 96% when I connected it the first time. Straight away. I noticed because I wanted to see the charging rate. Didn't last long (an hour or so) but I am still at a stable 93-94% now.
Probably nothing to do with it but it was odd to see.

I'm thinking of getting a used Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

I bought a MINIX NEO C for $90 because I wanted a general hub for my MacBook. But I soon realized it was a little bigger than I'd like, I didn't need the Ethernet port and the card readers, and I could live without the second USB-A port. I also have had some trouble with the USB ports, with some devices working on my MBP, but not on my MB with the MINIX NEO C. I think I want to just settle for the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. Apple adapters seem to be the most reliable ones I've had. Would it be a wise decision to get a used one from Amazon for about $50, or is it too risky and not worth it?

Looking for a device / USB hub that may or may not be out there? 😵

I am looking for a USB 3.0 hub that has headphone port (so i can leave my headphones plugged in and toggle output via os x ) as well as SD card reader (as being a photographer and the slot on the back of the iMac is PITA)

I know there are thunderbolt docks that do this, however are there any USB hubs on the cheaper end? I see there are ones that do headphone lines, and ones that do SD card slots. however any for both?

I bought a used one on eBay for $40 with free shipping, from a company that seems to deal with customer returns, open box items, etc. The company had a reasonable return policy, so it didn't feel like much of a risk. $40 with free shipping, and it works fine. Your experience buying used may differ, of course, but mine was great. Also got my rMB used on eBay.
 
My USB C Hub from OWC turned up today in the UK.

Will try and snap a picture later.

Very weighty and build quality is tip top.

Now just got to test it works!

Mine arrived about a week ago. Very nice unit. I have not used the HDMI port yet but the USB and ethernet ports work as expected. It really like that it is still a single plug into the wall as the Macbook gets it's power from the dock.

Since there are so many mixed reviews on many of the adapters out there I am very happy with this purchase.

I totally agree. I have been looking for a USB-C Dock for quite a while and was pleasantly surprised when I received mine from OWC last week. I have been using the HDMII port with my Samsung 28" UHD Monitor and it has supported 3840x2160 well. After installing the ethernet driver, that has worked great too.

I assume you're using it with 12" retina Macbook? Are you able to run 3840x2160 at 60Hz refresh rate?

So I've had some time to test the OWC USB-C dock further. Here is what I have found:
1. HDMI works fine.
2. I have not been able to test the downstream USB-C as I do not have any native USB-C devices. I did try to plug in a USB-C to displayport cabe but it did not work. It works fine directly plugged into the macbook and warns that direct plug is the only way it will work. I was hoping it would work.
3. Ethernet works but I am only getting 100, not gigabit. I have tried plugging it into several different gigabit routers and all I get is a 100 connection. This is a major disappointment and I will contact OWC about this.
4. USB-A ports seem to work ok with various drives.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the Ethernet port. I have At&T gigapower and have been getting between 800-990 consistently through mine. I did have a small problem initially, but I installed the driver from the OWC website and changed the service order on the network devices via Network Preferences (for some reason it was defaulting to my wireless network). You have probably already tried this, but if you have not, I would give it a try.

Thanks for the tips.

I simply disabled the wireless when I connected the dock so I did not have to change the order.

I must have been doing something wrong. I started over, reinstalled the driver, rebooted and now show gigabit speed.

Crisis averted.
 
Mines going back tomorrow sadly, Drobo dashboard doesn't pick up my harddrives via a dock which kind of defeats the point of the dock!
 
I'm looking for a USB-C docking unit for a Retina MacBook.

Must have features:
– loading MacBook through the dock
– 1 RJ45 gigabit ethernet port
– 2 USB type A
– Mini Display/Display port
– Audio port (3.5 mm)

Nice to have features:
– Thunderbolt port(s)
– HDMI
– 4 USB type A

Is there anyone out there?
