I'm trying to back up a wedding movie of my cousins and when I create an image the image is 4.36GB, but the DVD-R says that there is only 4.28GB of space on it..where did the 0.42GB go??

Most likely this is just due to how either toast or disk utility makes the image, often images are different sizes than the actual disk is. If nothing is messed up when you are viewing the dvd's backup, I would suspect that you could compare the original and the backup's discs and they would be the same.
