No, I haven't yet (I must admit I find myself quite clueless in Windows as I find everything so non-intuitive which is why I like OSX so much better ;) ), but when I tried to restart the Mac I was alerted about 92 updates installing and that I shouldn't power off yet. It's been going on for a very long time. Maybe this is that update done automatically.

Too bad about the BIOS thing, but I did some more research and read about using "safe mode" (I suppose this is similar to the safe mode on Macs) and that the firmware utility might work then. When the update is done I'll see if I can boot into that mode. Apparently you press and hold F8 (or Fn-F8) while booting into Windows from what I've picked up on the web.

When the update is done, reboot and run it again until there is nothing more to update. Also updates want to be updated ;)

Safe mode:

When you power on the BMP you get the white screen where you can hold down <ALT> to get into the Mac's boot menu. After selecting Windows the screen gets black and after a short while you see a binking cursor in the left upper corner of the screen. At this time press <F8> to get into the Windows boot menu where you can sekect the Safe Mode.

If you are bored about this just press <F8> in intervals of 1 second until you see the Windows boot menu ( after the Mac's boot menu ). No joke.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Windows seems to work fine, but unfortunately not the firmware app. Looks like it might not be compatible with my specific drive after all. More research needed....
Oh well, at least I now know how to install and run Windows on the Mac if I should continue needing it and buy a license.

Just me but I wouldn't trust a virtual machine to make firmware changes on hardware.

I recently tried to update firmware of a camera using the Windows updater in Parallels, Win 7 and 8.1, on two different machines.....updater crashed every time.

Since there were no problems reported by proper windows users, I have to assume it was the fact that I was using a VM. Bootcamp might have done better.

Hmmmm.... might just have to temporarily remove the DVD drive and put it in my Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.8) in order to flash it there (the Mac version of the software is PPC and won't work on the Macbook Pro which refuses to run Snow Leopard).
