This just happened recently, when i stick a cd (blank or press) the superdrive will not read the cd. Nothing is being mounted on the desktop, nor do i hear it spinning. Last time i used the cd drive was last week when i went to backup a cd.

any clue on what's wrong?

Yea, this is common with the drives Apple uses (typically Pioneer models).
I had exactly the same problem.
When the drive gets dirty, it stops functioning. The solution is to remove it, take the cover off the drive, thoroughly blow the dust out and wipe the laser lens off with something like lens paper.
Worked like a charm for me.. dead DVD-R to working perfectly.
