Superduper & diskimage backup

I have used superduper to create a clone back up of my Mac Hard drive which is a 300gb drive. Now my external drive is 500gb so when I create my clone I am wasting 200gb. I have switched to a disk image so I can use the rest of the drive for other backups. Besides losing the ability of booting off the backup (which is not a issue because I have a 80gb emergency boot drive I use for other macs) Is they any other problems I could encounter by using a disk image? Is it just as safe if I need to recover from a disk crash?

You can easily partition your external drive so that you can use the rest of the space. I have a 500gb external and only a 320 gb internal, so I split the external into 2 partitions.

diskimage probably takes longer to create; with SuperDuper you can just update for changes.
