I have my 2012 Mini running Mojave
I have my 2018 Mini running BigSir

after my boot loop with my 2018 Im looking to get some external HD's and make some bootable clones for both Mini's
and a Mojave boot for my 2018
plus doing NON time machine backups, transferring files-keeping them off my 2018

Im buying this the end of the week along with some spinner and SSD drives (for the bootable clones)

what one works with both?
what ones the more simplified to use?

thanks
John

Both CCC and SuperDuper should run with either internal or external drives, as long they can be recognised by the computer when connected.

I cannot run the latest version of CCC on my Mac Pro with Mojave installed, but you could contact the developer to see if they can suggest something. In my case I originally purchased CCC 5, then upgraded to version 6 at extra cost. Version 5 continues on the Mac Pro, while I use 6 on the new Mini with Big Sur.

In terms of features I would lean towards CCC, which feels like a more modern app, though I cannot bring myself to say a bad word about SuperDuper, considering it has worked reliably for me since 2005. I paid £11 and never been charged a penny for updates since.

The developer of SuperDuper had some initial difficulties with Big Sur compatibility, but seems to be finding ways around that with a recent beta. You should be able to download different versions of the same app for each computer and run them separately.

Neither app is complicated to run as such. Overall CCC feels like the more complete app in terms of features and certainly looks more modern, however you will likely find it costs more to run with updates. It's not necessarily a bad thing to be paying for updates though if it ensures continued development. I am trying to be as balanced as possible here, because both apps are excellent.

OP:

I think the OWC dual-bay dock is overpriced.

You'd do just as well with a generic SINGLE bay USB3/SATA dock from a bunch of different suppliers.

Both CCC and SD will work.
The major difference between them is that CCC offers more options, including the ability to clone the recovery partition (not sure if SD is offering that now).

Which is "simpler"?
I would think that SD is "right out of the box",
BUT
CCC has a "simplified menu" setting that is about the same.
(but again, in regular menu mode CCC has more options, which I find useful).

I gather that is correct about SuperDuper not installing the recovery drive with cloned copies, however it can be fixed by installing the OS again afterwards I believe. Not ideal perhaps but it achieves the same end result.
