I can find the movie on the UK itunes store yet it’s available on blu ray in the UK, and on the itunes store in the US. What gives?

This is common. Not everything available on any other format is available in iTunes. iTunes is just ONE of many channels for video distribution. If you wait awhile, it may eventually show up there. Or you can buy the disc and rip your own copy or perhaps check other channels and it may be found there.

Update: it may be available via Amazon Prime. I can see the stream of the extended cut IS available via Amazon Video.

Nothing particularly strange. Maybe someone else bought out it's new release availability for a while. Or maybe the Studio just hasn't got around to making it available on iTunes yet. While we Apple people might see iTunes as the center of the video universe, the broader world sees it as just one channel. And Apple apparently demands so much right off the top, it may not even be the highest priority channel for distribution. Patience and it may show up there eventually. Else, look around, someone else probably has it as a stream now (Amazon looks very likely).

I just don’t understand why Warner Bros. are happy to release the movie worldwide without region lock on bluray but for some region it is region locked on itunes.

How does this benefit anyone?

Only Warner knows.

Guess: they'd probably rather lock it down as much as possible, but the financial analysis suggested it was optimal to make the BD that way (since that's a physical lock) while streaming files can have 1000 variations without much added cost if they wanted to roll out 1000 versions.
