One thing I dont understand is...

People say the iPad Mini is better than the Nexus 7 because it has a larger screen.

But people want the iPhone to stay 4'' or even back to 3.5''.

lol

A big screen makes a huge difference right? Why can't this logic be applied to the iPhone?

Where's the 4.5 to 5'' iPhone option?

there are people that want phone as a phone (not so big). I have a friend that have Note 2, and he don't need tablet or smaller size phone. cause he doesn't want clutter with many devices.

and my other friend is fine with cheap nokia + carrying nexus 7. so different needs with people I guess.

You Dont say!

we all know this was coming out when they release that stupid useless blurry screen and leftover cpu from iphone 4s.Also! little innovation for ipad mini. :D

Woot! Finally that retina we have all been waiting for! Come along little darlin'!

People keep expecting revolutionary updates. But you can only do so much with tablets and phones. There is no more revolutionary updates, people need to get used to spec bumps and small touches.

There's always a hoard of people complaining that the next iPad/iPhone doesn't have something revolutionary like holograms or augmented reality or something. If you're looking for the next thing that will wow you don't expect to find it with the next phone or tablet update (from either Apple or its competitors); at least not in the near future.

If those spec bumps would be more generous, I wouldn't have a problem. Nothing on today's cellphones, tablets, and also soon laptops, is upgradeable in any way. It's buy and throw away mentality. The lifespan of your device is now precisely controlled. For example, there is a well thought out reason the iPhone 5 only has 1 GB of RAM, and not 2 GB.

Completely different use cases (Pocketable vs non-pocketable, one hand operation vs two hand operation), so different rules apply. However, I do think Apple should offer a larger size option. As long as they don't go the Android route of making all flagship phones huge and all smaller phones lesser specced.

Im happy with my non-retina mini. I might upgrade to retina version if it is the same weight and the battery life doesn't suffer.

The screen is hardly blurry. The screen is a good forvit not to be retina.

As a Mini user, I can't say that resolution has ever been an issue. I think Apple should retain the current display and utilise a more powerful CPU/GPU.

Excatly! I think people who say the screen is crap never played around with a mini to see the screen is still a good screen regardless of it being non retina.

Well since AU Optronics who are producing the retina display for Apple have stated since late last year the part would be available for production Q3 with release Q3/Q4 2013, I think its patently obvious that yes a retina display mini would be available in the second half of 2013.

Fall is in the second half of 2013 after all. ;)

I am beginning to wonder if Apple is splitting the product lines into "Standard" and "Retina""

I would not be surprised if the next product cycles looked something like this:
Macbook Air, Non Retina
Macbook Pro with Retina Display
Ipad "5" Retina Display
iPad Mini Non Retina

No More "Classic" MBP
No More iPad 2

And possibly having the desktops line up something like
27" Imac with Retina
21.5" iMac non Retina

Mac mini with your choice of display , possibly with a "pro" option to replace the Mac Pro.
It just seems that apple is shifting towards Retina being a premium option on the products and leaving the lower priced products with standard screens.

5120 x 2880 (14.75MP) resolution screen being powered by a mobile GPU!

Nexus 7 already beats the Mini. The Mini really needs an update to bring it up to par. Course even being overpriced and under speced it still sells because of the little :apple: on it. Build quality is great, but take away the skin you don't have much left to justify the price.

I know I'll be hated on for saying that, but it's the truth, not my opinion.

The crappy WiFi antenna and cheap components really killed the Nexus 7 for me. Slow 2.4 GHz WiFi only? Weak, crackly speaker? Multitouch/static issues? Asus really went super cheap with the components. The hardware was totally undeserving of the software imo.

As for the news topic -- there is absolutely no need to release anything other than a Retina iPad mini next. Which is why I think an non-retina Mini next month is bogus. Either it'll be retina or it will not come out until the fall.

now that the rumours about the production of an iPad mini retina is flying around

sales will begin to fall

thanks again

To Apple: Spare a non-retina April-mini and focus on Retina-Mini for my birthday in July would be nice ... A little bit thicker and heavier would be ok for me.

Fashion versus practicality versus usability.
iPhone 5 is 4 inch. iPad Mini is 7.9 inch. iPhone 5s or 6 should not exceed 5 inch. Maybe Apple should do 2 iphones, 4 and 5 inches.

Anyone else think this may be a total BS story?

If Apple has the intention of going Retina on the 2nd gen which will add weight, thickness and possibly degrade battery life, why would you start with a product of better dimensions then immediately gimp it 12 months later?

Obviously the mini was a beta product to see how well the market absorbed a smaller iPad and its sold (probably) better than they anticipated but I can't see why then you'd take what the mini has (form factor) and then make it chunky to include the retina. If it can't fit in more or less the same width and weight it seems like a backwards step forwards.

Curious to know tbh.

You're talking about different devices, and different devices have different parameters that people look for in said device (which applies even if they were the same device!).

I can't speak for everyone else, but personally, if I can't carry my phone around comfortably in my front pocket, it's taking away a major advantage that phones are supposed to have: portability. As long as I can use it with one hand (comfortably) and can fit it in my pockets (comfortably), I don't really care what size it is.

No, it's your opinion.
I've used the nexus 7 and the iPad mini for some months now, and the difference in quality is night and day. The 4:3 form factor and the larger screen on the mini, as well as the brilliant weight and thinness makes the mini 100x better for me personally, and that's not even taking iCloud and the great software of iOS into account

This isn't necessarily relevant to the topic at hand, but I am just ready for a keynote presentation at this point.

It's been almost 5 months since the last keynote, at which the iPad mini was introduced.

iOS, end of story.
If you seriously look at processor specs when buying a tablet, you have my pity.

I totally agree with you. A retina Mini is going to be a superb upgrade, and I'm very anxious to buy one.

Me too but only if sports 1GIG of Ram and the A6.
Need 64 poliphony voices at least (even if i see the CrudeBite Piano which claims
to have 80-100 stereo voice by disk streaming..
Crudebyte • CMP Grand Piano)
Maybe the truth is the middle,Apple could announce it at next WWDC with IOS7 Preview
but only to be available in September.

I hear so many users try to rationalize that 'it's not that bad'....but you just KNOW they are all going to talk about how AMAZING the retina version is when it comes out...

Because in the real world those two statements aren't contradictory. It's perfectly feasible that the screen isn't "that bad" and it's highly likely retina will be "amazing". Only in a puerile mind can only one thing be good at any one time.
