Well I wear contacts and staring at a computer screen can sometimes make my eyes dry. With the kindle I haven't had that problem. Most times I don't even have to turn any screen brightness on with the display. Yeah I like the waterproof part a lot. Use it in the pool and hot tub out back. I tried really hard to make my Surface the only device I need even with ebooks. It's crazy you can buy a Kindle Fire hd Tablet for like 49 dollars and use it to read books, watch movies and play games but the bare bones one I wanted (the kindle paperwhite) cost 120 dollars.

If I understand correctly the E-Ink is supposedly much easier on the eyes for extended reading? My wife sister just purchased ... I can't recall if it is the new waterproof paperwhite or the Oasis? I know she liked the waterproof feature since she likes to use it at the beach.
Oasis I think as its considerably more than the paper white or was in UK as I got my wife one for use in the pool etc last year

Great format and size which is why I think the new folderables smart phones will be good

Cant say I kindle on my SB2 or SP6 but my GO no problem and I like the night mode

I liked the Oasis a lot but went with the paperwhite because of money and I wasn't sure I would like holding it with the(I don't know what to call it) grip bulge? The Paperwhite itself weighs next to nothing anyway so I have never had a problem with it being a burden when holding it.

Yep the bulge seems odd but the reality is different re balance/CoG etc but expensive unless the water resistance is a must the paperwhite is a good buy

I actually got the Kindle Paperwhite that is water resistant. What got me sold was if I want to read in portrait or landscape the device didn't feel any different because it's uniform and with the Oasis the bulge felt like it might make it akwared

Opps my bad the paperwhite is also now water resistant, it was not over a year back

Landscape really ? not sure it's an option on my wifes and do not have it to hand to check

My only gripe is micro usb and the PW has no buttons that my wife likes else hard to match :)

I forgot about the buttons on the Oasis. When I read I tend to tap my fingers every once in a while. I have bad Adhd and can imagine onlyhow frustrated I would be accidentally clicking the buttons lol

Best use of bulge, Mrs in Bali the other week :)

I see what you are saying. It appears the Paperwhite is about $129 and the Oasis at about $249. For the extra money, you get 12 LED backlight vs 5 and adaptive light sensor. Worth the $120 difference?

In addition to now being water resistant, the new Paperwhite is also now 300ppi resolution like the Oasis. I believe the previous model was lower?

That picture right there could just easily be my wife's sister on the beach. Tablet in one hand, wine in the other. I will have to double check and ask her which one she did purchase.

Was marginal before unless you needed the water resistance now very hard to justify I would say, but for pool use the bulge extra grip with wet or oily hands and the 12 led's for sunglasses use does have some + points, but niche.

Ok, I saw the Surdace Book 2 for the first time at the weekend, I have to admit I really liked the 13” model, and thought it so cool and nuts that I took the screen off the keyboard..

I had a bit of a play with it, hardly anything installed on it though, it was in a store, and I did find it slow? Is that normal? It seemed to take its time opening things?

It was cool and impressive otherwise, great keyboard on it.

Hi apolloa,

It might have been a good idea to see if it was either the 128 or 256gb version (had you known to look for it, I mean).

I've got the 256gb version and it is indeed on the slow side. Were you or others to be open to my recommendation/suggestion/opinion, I'd shy away from both the 128 and 256gb versions. Go for the 512gb if you can.

In saying that, the 256gb will be OK for most tasks if you're not wholly hellbent on speed at all costs. However, there have been some improvements to my machine the past couple of months (was it October update that had some performance upgrades for SB?). I'd wager that the store wouldn't have updated their demo models and so you'd probably be seeing the hairpulling experience I had for pretty much all of last year (had mine since Dec 2017).

But, yes, after that digression, if you do opt to go SB2, it might pay to save up an extra week or two and get the bigger capacity drive. Still, I love my machine, warts and all.

It all depends what your reference point is on being a bit slow :)

Compared to say little apps that run on Mobile OS vs full featured programs then understandably

Writing massive files as in Bodies case with the 256GB drive then maybe yes

Demo units not always the best of examples but glad you enjoyed initial fiddle :)

I agree with buying a bigger drive. MS has these on sale frequently.

I adored the keyboard on it (No physical issues with SB2s keyboard for me).

@Bodie CI5 thanks for clarifying the slow 256gb drive. Glad you still enjoy yours.

Microsoft Stores are often the best place to demo them because you can set up some one on one time with the machine with a fresh install. Otherwise, demo machines can often get messed with, people adjusting power settings, defaults, etc.

That said, it does appear to be a documented issue that the 128/256 SSD versions are significantly slower than the 512/1TB versions.

I have seen some suggestions to turn off the Windows 10 write-cache buffer to uncap write speeds on the 128/256 models, but I don't have one to try it.

Mine is not slow at all. Granted I have the i7 processor and the 512GB SSD (which is faster than the 128/256 models). And I conservative about what software I install on it. But mine pretty much rips through anything. My usual apps aren't particularly hard-core (Word/PowerPoint/email type work mostly plus 5ish tabs open on Chrome), but everything opens & saves instantly.

Hmm interesting, thanks guys. I would get a 512gb model anyway if I bought one. It was a nice machine. I need to get a computer at some point, well a new one, When I have the money I’ll have to decide between staying Mac or move to Windows..!! But if Apple make their own A series Arm SOC’a for computers then it’ll be a Windows machine without question.
But I was impressed with the Surface Book 2

SB2 is a great notebook, however similar to Mac's has very poor reparability although Microsoft's cover is far more reasonable than Apple's. I owned a 1st Gen and it was flawless and remains to be.

I have heard the service is pretty good, but I’m in the UK and Apple does offer good service.
I need to buy a new TV first, but I may take a look at the next 13” Surface Book. Or Apple may upgrade the iMac, the Surface Book here in the UK is far from a cheap product, but you do get two devices in one.

I have found MS service to be excellent, but I do have an MS store near my house so that probably helps. That said, the extended warranty is about $100 less than Apple Care+ and they generally just replace the device rather than attempt a repair in most cases.

In many respects the Surface Book only makes sense if your going to make use of the 2 in 1 as your paying a lot more for the feature/hardware. Outside of US & EU I've never found Apple to be anything special regarding customer service, polite & helpful yes. Side-tracking; although a 1st Gen I was very happy with my Surface Book and my daughter remains to be so.

Asus gave me 14 day return period and a 3 year international warranty, Apple locally offers no return period and a basic 12 month warranty, thx appreciate that. Previously Microsoft gave me a 2 year international warranty and a return period. TBH even Acer with a cheap $650 2in1 that I use on the go in the field, gave me better cover than Apple offers with a 15" MBP costing $4,240 before tax o_O

Problem with Apple is it now believes it's own BS too much and why Pro's are dropping the platform as it simply no longer deliver's. I think Apple in many respects has forgotten it's position with the customer. After over 20 years using the Mac in 2019 I've completely dropped the Mac professionally. When the other Mac's the family uses expire I seriously doubt the replacement will be another Mac unless Apple changes it's tune, which is unlikely. The value that was once intrinsic to the Mac simply no longer exists...

Apple has just become far too money grabbing and far less customer centric for my liking, the advantages the OS once presented are fast eroding...

One of the best places to buy Surface devices in UK is John Lewis re 2 years standard warranty and of course excellent service with them.

I agree with what you say, I want to stay with Apple for my mobile devices. I don’t include my computer in that though. OSX advantages are slowly eroding.

Haha I was in John Lewis when I was looking at it. I love their stores and service, better then a Apples IMO.

EDIT: I should add though unfortunately the nearest JL store is about 60 miles from me, thank goodness for their online shopping!

Microsoft planning a big upgrade to the entry-level Surface Book 2

Microsoft is planning a quiet upgrade to the Surface Book 2 line of laptops.

Listing for a new Surface Book 2 variant has been showing up at online retailers, listing an entry-level model with an Intel Core i5-8350U processor, a significant upgrade over the current Intel Core i5-7300U processor in the entry-level model.

That model is a dual-core processor, while the new processor is quad-core and therefore significantly more powerful.
