I am intimidated by Windows, but I love the idea of the Surface Pro, Surface Book 2 and especially the Surface Studio.

I was as well, having not used it since XP, well a brief and forgettable spell with Vista, but it had been a long time. The 30 days trial really helped with that. If I had to make up my mind in 14 days I probably would have just returned it. It at first seemed so foreign and different, largely all in my head, because I had already decided that Windows intimidated me. Getting past that the more I learned and got comfortable with it, the more I discovered and liked.

I appreciate how customizable Windows 10 is. For example I learned I could set up in Power Settings what happens when I close the lid, between do nothing, hibernate, sleep, and shut down and can change that behavior for battery or plugged in. Can that be done with Mac? I have never found a way to do it with my MacBook Pro. I was trying to find something similar, but it seems closing the lid whether powered or on battery does what Apple has decided it should do.

The power button has the same customization.

In short, don’t be intimidated by Windows 10 :)

The bold is largely my experiences with any iPad, save the Mini which is great for on the go. I do love the Pencil, but I do not love costly iDevices dying on me a year in (my experiences with every phone and iPad save for my 7+ since 2014). I missed the pencil and my mom’s iPad 2 needs replacing, so here I am with a 2018 iPad because I got one very cheap that mom will eventually inherit. I am intimidated by Windows, but I love the idea of the Surface Pro, Surface Book 2 and especially the Surface Studio.

I think you’re right about the Go being the gateway.

@Dave245 - I have been using iMacs exclusively for almost 20 years, but the opportunity to draw on my screen and truly interact with it, is something I wish Apple would have done first. They can be solid workhorses and they look great, but if I stick with an AiO, it has to do more and make me want to use it.

I’m getting to a point now where I’m stopping and thinking to myself why am I using 2 devices? For example I have an iPad Pro 12.9” that I use for drawing, note taking, photo editing (Pixelmator and Affinity photo), I also watch YouTube and Netflix, then when I want to do long periods of writing I use my iMac (I did use my MacBook Pro 2011 but it recently died). Doing all that can be done on one device like the Surface, so why am I paying for an iPad Pro 12.9” at over £1000 (I got it last year with 512GB) and then also looking at a new MacBook to replace my 2011 as it recently died, That’s what I’ve thought to myself recently!

It’s like there’s a conflict somewhere, much like Panos Panay (Surface boss) said.

A came across a comparison review from Lisa Gade between the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro. She had some of the same observations that I did about the Apple Pencil being the better of the two for sketching, coloring etc., but both being quite good, particularly for note taking.

But to that end, while she compared mostly the similarities between the two, she did mention that if it wasn’t for drawing/sketching and it meeting her needs for sitting on the couch, she wouldn’t own an iPad 12.9”.

That is sort of how I feel about my iPad Pro as well. I am no artist, but I do like to color and I use my iPad Pro for that, some media consumption and checking email, etc. before turning it. It spends most of its time in my nightstand.

Edit: I wouldn’t own an iPad Pro either if I hadn’t already purchased it long before the Surface Pro.

The Surface Pro I take pretty much everywhere and it’s the go to device unless I need multi-monitor support.

If I was going to replace both the iPad Pro and a MacBook Pro, the Surface Book 2 would be a strong contender due to the discreet graphics card and high battery capacity, but I do like the light weight and mobility of the Surface Pro and being able to charge it in the car via 12v adapter negates a lot of the battery life difference between the Pro and SB2. That would be a tough choice. SB2 is closer MBP alternative, but 15”, while amazingly light for its size is a little unwieldy. That said disconnect one and try it.

Also, Microsoft has 30 day returns. A much better trial period to get comfortable than Apples rather rushed 14.

I did see the Surface Book 2 in the shop yesterday as well as the Surface Laptop but I’m leaning more towards the Surface Pro for portability around the house and so on. It’s not like I do anything too heavy anyway, I was still using my 2011 MacBook Pro until it died recently, what I’m thinking about doing is updating my iMac later this year (if they update them) and them getting a Surface Pro as my portable machine, it will be kind of like a test, see what happens with my iPad Pro, it may be that I don’t use it after that and can retire it completely or maybe I’ll only use it for certain tasks. I may wait until early next year and see what Surface updates come along.

I still think Apple are missing a trick here by sticking to their guns and not embracing the hybrid style of devices, the iPad Pro can only get you so far. But being able to do everything I need to do on one device is very appealing, even adding in some light gaming.

All fine reasons to go Surface.

Yeah, $1400 for an iPad Pro 12.9” and the ASK (which decided not to work all the time about 6 weeks in, that I ultimately ignored), and then the random touch screen failures made me think I made a mistake buying this for the pencil. I loved to draw on the iPP, but the two devices are problematic now that school is on hold. Like Dave, I use my iMac for longer documents and other things too.

So I am watching and waiting.

Microsoft did a recent refresh of the 2017 model, adding the LTE version. Based on previous release date history, it will likely be May/June 2019 for the next version of the Surface Pro.

I really hope that this is not the case. Hoping LTE was a refresh and that an updated model will come this year. Not holding my breath though.

If MBA or 12” gets a good update I may reluctantly go that way...

Me too, but the good news is that if you can wait, the rumors are that it will be a heavily redesigned Surface Pro 5. Microsoft never called the Pro (2017) the Surface Pro 5, because Panos Panay said that it was not a radical enough change from the 4 to warrant its own version number. So the 2017 was in itself a refresh of the 4.

I was also hoping that they would update the Surface Book 2, this fall and while there is still time for an October update, I haven’t heard any leaks/news/rumors that this will be the case.

Good piece. It is funny that Apple makes arguments such as "it doesn't feel natural to reach out to touch a computer screen" and goes on about how your arm would get tired due to frequently interacting with the display and then adds a trackpad-less keyboard to the iPad Pro, ensuring you will have to interact with and touch it far more than you do with a Windows 2-1 such as the Surface Pro.

Of course, I am sure they just released that lousy ASK keyboard as a concession to those whose arms got tired holding a 12.9" tablet and wanted to set it down, but that is another story :)

Eventually, I think they are going to have to cave further. The touch bar is little more than a novelty. Even the touchscreen trackpad on the Asus Zenbook has more use and function.

Apple has said a number of different things about the Surface in the past, Tim Cook famously said the toaster and refrigerator thing back in 2012 i think, he later called the Surface Book "diluted" the thing is that everything is a compromise, the iPad Pro is a compromise and don't get me wrong i'm not hating on the iPad Pro i really like mine, hell i might even buy this year's redesigned version, BUT i do really want more productivity and that will only come from a full MacOS and iPad Pro merge i think.

The ASK keyboard has put me off from buying one for my iPad Pro, yet when i tried the Surface Pro keyboard in Curry's PC world it was so much better, i'm not hating on Apple i'm an Apple fan with LOTS of Apple products BUT i also have to give Microsoft credit for building a solid machine with the Surface Pro, at least in terms of design, i can't speak for Windows 10 on the Surface Pro since i haven't had time to test it out.

The iPad Pro ISN'T a product that i can get all of my work done with and that's a shame, it means i'm going to have to get another Mac (probably the 12" MacBook once Apple has updated it) but somewhere down the line when Microsoft update the Surface to the Surface 5 i will be taking a hard look and well decide to buy one, test it alongside my current setup and see how it goes.

A Surface where i can do a number of desktop things would be great, PC gaming (not high end) would be great since so many games just aren't available on the Mac at the moment.

It's very interesting article, i still don't know why Apple is being so stubborn about this, is it because they truly believe it's a bad idea? or is it because they want people to still buy two devices?
[doublepost=1536404121][/doublepost]As a side note Microsoft have sent out invites for an event, the headline reads "A moment of you're time" it takes place October 2nd. Be interesting to see if they announce new Surface Pro's

The Verge seems to think that a redesigned Surface Studio will be the big news or the event, along with a Surface Dock 2 and some software releases, but will likely also include processor updates to refresh the Surface Pro (Surface Pro 2018?) and Surface Laptop lines, with new processors. A heavily redesigned Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 3 due next year. But maybe Microsoft will surprise us?

If there's no redesign or big Surface Pro 5 update then i will wait it out until next year, what i will do is get the 12" MacBook and wait it out. That way i've got a machine for now but i can then test a brand new redesigned Surface Pro 5 next year when they come out.

My overall plan tho is to keep with an iMac and iPad Pro but i will try out and test a Surface Pro against my work drop, what might then happen is it replaces my iPad Pro in time. I'm looking forward to seeing what both Apple and Microsoft have in store for us at their events.

I had a Surface Pro3. I used it for about a year. I am not sure what made me realize, but it was getting pretty hot. SO I paid more attention to it. Well it was heating up pretty quickly, just using a browser. So I returned it to BB (Geek Squad) and they sent me a new one. Used it for several days and it was doing the same. When they sent me the 3rd one and it was bent - I said no way, I was done. BB gave me back all my money and I tried out different tablets. I ended up with an ipad Pro and fell in love.... No looking back...

So unless someone could prove to me that their QC is a lot better - I avoid the Surfaces. The Go is cute... :)

Well... I have had 1 Surface Pro that has been flawless and have had to return 3 2018 MacBook Pros, so I guess if just one individual tale is an accurate comparison of a companies overall QC...

Oh let there be a Surface Studio 2. Many thanks for posting that MS event link.

Nice to see other folks thoughts on the ASK, I am also not a fan and used it only to as a stand after the first month.

I’m thinking there might be, it hasn’t been updated since it was introduced in 2016. Also wonder if there will be a Surface Book 3? The Pro is likely to get spec updates but a major redesign is rumoured for 2019.

I am almost certain that there will be a Surface Studio 2 announcement at this years event. I think the only real question will be about what it looks like. The video I posted earlier hints at a few things, the local store near me suggested that the monitor may also be able to be separated from the base and used as a stand-alone monitor for other Surface Devices. That might be interesting, but not sure it would really make much sense as it would maybe cut into Studio sales? But that’s the way of rumors :)

I know there is a lot of speculation that the Surface Book 2, Surface Book Pro and Surface Laptops will see processor bumps with a Whiskey Lake refresh.

Surface Pro rumored to have a heavy update 2019, that may also be the case for Surface Book 3, though I hope it comes sooner.

I really like the Surface Book 2. Good battery life, nice dedicated GPU with the GTX 1060/6gb. I would be surprised if the next version didn’t have options for 32GB RAM, larger storage and hopefully TB3 rather than just USB-C 3.0 gen 2

Is it sad I am more jazzed for the MS event than Apple’s September one?

I have seen a desire for the Studio monitor as a stand alone product, I want the whole shebang. The two reasons why it excites me: I can doodle on it and it reminds me of my favorite iMac on gamma rays. :D I hope it has much more current internals and higher pressure sensitivity for the Pen.

Those Surface Book future specs sound like something they would implement.

I would be curious to see the next Surface Pro too. When things normalize, and the 2017 goes down in price, I would like to try one.

Okay, superficial time: Wonder what bird they will use next? (yes, the Gray or Black crowned crane that was on the 2017 Surface Pro wallpaper is one of my fave birds). :p

The only thing i'm looking forward too at the Apple event in September is the Series 4 Apple Watch, that's only because i'm still using the very first gen, i'd like to see the new iPad Pro's but according to the famous insider Mark Gurman it sounds like the September event might just be Watches and iPhone's which i think is a little disappointing.

I'd like to see the next Surface Pro simply because if they continue to make it better with the next iteration, like they have been doing since the very first Surface, it will tempt me even further. Yes i've been an Apple guy since 2011 but apart from the 12" MacBook and iMac i'm unimpressed with the current line-up, to top it off Apple don't offer a Surface Pro type of device which i think is a shame. The iPad Pro just isn't there no matter how much i may want it to be, yes there is rumoured to be a redesign this year for the iPad Pro but unless they do anything drastic it still won't be a FULL laptop replacement.

I wonder what specs we are talking if they do indeed update the Surface Pro and Surface Book 2 with spec updates later this year? the new MacBook Pro's got quad core and 6 core processors but surely that won't happen for the Surface Pro since it's a smaller and thinner device?

Like @Dave245, about the only thing that interests me this September from Apple is the Series 4 Apple Watch. I am hoping they reduce the bezel, increase screen size and battery life. I currently have a Series 2, my wife a series 0 because she has never found a reason to upgrade. But it looks like the Series 0 support is ending.

I guess a lot of folks have a desire for the Studio monitor as a standalone from what the folks at the Microsoft Store were telling me. I suppose that is why the rumor. But they also mentioned beefed up specks, because current units are basically laptop internals. From what he was saying, it sounds like it may be a big overhaul.

. You would hope so right? 32GB and 2TB and larger SSD are becoming common offerings among competitors. Thunderbolt 3 should have been in the last one. But the resistance to fully implement Thunderbolt 3 is an area where I wonder why Microsoft is dragging its feet. They claim that there isn't enough of a demand from Surface owners for Thunderbolt 3, but they have to know it is coming.

I would be curious to see the next Surface Pro too. When things normalize, and the 2017 goes down in price, I would like to try one.

Whiskey Lake should be a nice spec bump, but it will be interesting to see what the revamped model looks like. Surface 5, Surface 6 (since it will be the 6th iteration)? Whatever they decide to call it. Improved battery life, USB-C, support for the improved pen they have shown for the Surface Studio? I have seen some patent specs for a Microsoft Taptic pen. I wonder if that is coming to both?

@Dave245, I am guessing not. The current Surface Pro is dual core. The rumored spec update for this year is a refresh with Whiskey Lake processors, which will still be a 15W TPD, 4-core.

If it’s a great new redesign the Surface Pro 2019 (if gets announced in 2019) could very well be my very first Surface and computer that replaces my laptop and iPad.

I just saw this article from a few months back, Tim is still insistent that Apple won’t do it and that it’s not what the user wants. He insists that he uses both Mac at work and iPad at home and for travel, he uses everything and loves everything. So are we expected to buy both the iPad and a Mac forever? While Microsoft have perfected the Surface over many iterations.

Personally I am hoping for the Red-Tailed Hawk, since they are common to my neck of the woods :)

I wonder what Intel will name their next "Lake" processor. What have they had so far? Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Sky Lake, Whiskey Lake, Amber Lake. I am sure I am missing some. Maybe Crystal Lake? The Machine freaks out every Friday the 13th :)

I hope the Apple watch is what you want it to be. I am waiting on this new Mac Mini. If it is the true successor of the 2012 Mac Mini with better graphics and a reasonable price point, I may seriously consider it. That is the only Apple tech that interests me, moreso if MS wait on a Surface Studio update.

Thanks for posting those Surface Studio speculatory bits and the interesting patent for the Pen. Very enticing.

It would be neat if the next Surface Pro gets a quad core chip. The Surface Book, any reason why MS is reluctant with Thunderbolt 3? Too expensive a part for them or something else? LOL (Crystal Lake Intel. They should do that. I mean whiskey lake sounds like a distillery's dream...) I hope you get your Red Tailed Hawk.

I think I finally convinced my mom she inherited my 2018 iPad. Now all I have to do is start working full time again (which I hope to be doing before the end of this month). Once that happens, I might get a Surface Pro 2017 on sale.

We'll see what happens.

The Taptic pen it seems is supposed to give a better pen to glass feel that simulates different angles, strokes, etc. Between that and the textured glass that they have been exploring, which feels smooth to the touch, but apparently feels rougher to the smoother/harder tip of the stylus, they may do a good job of simulating the pen to paper experience. Or at least come much closer than current offerings from MS and Apple.
