So then for a "Verizon" phone purchased from Apple, if I want to swap in my existing AT&T SIM in order to activate on my current AT&T account - is the thinking that I should do so before ever turning on phone? And if the phone asks me to activate with the SIM that came with the phone, I can click "star over" and it will activate with my AT&T SIM?

@kupkakez and @cwosigns - is this the process you both followed (and was it Verizon to AT&T)? What about the earlier thread that says you need to call Verizon to do this and there's no way around it?

I did not call anybody. What I did was popped out the ATT SIM and put in my Cricket SIM before I turned the phone on. IT took a few attempts to get through Apple’s activation server and then the next screen was about “activating” my ATT service number. I let it sit for about 10 minutes spinning and then hit the physical button on the right side of the iPhone and a couple options popped up one was “start over” the other was “shut down” I can’t remember now if there was any other options.

Once I hit “start over” it just took me right to the home screen. From there I just signed into iCloud and set up as new. I didn’t want to risk wiping it and restoring from a backup.

@bremmma

Did you have any luck with this? I'm in exactly the same situation as you. I'm not home now so I can't try again yet. Tried earlier but got the message that the activation servers were down...

Haven't tried yet either - need another hour or two before I can risk being without the phone if things go wrong. (I wonder if I could at least reactivate my current phone if thats the case?)

In any event, I will post an update when I try it.

[doublepost=1509740024][/doublepost]Am I missing something here? I thought the ATT/TMobile phones used GSM networks and the Verizion/Sprint networks used CDMA.

For their legacy networks, yes. They both use LTE and the Verizon models support both GSM and CDMA.

what issues are you having?

I'm just stuck at the activation screen where it fails.

I'm trying to make it skip it but it always goes back and tries to activate.

I bought this iphone using a verizon account online and picked up at the apple store. (if this helps)

Talking to apple she said I had to call verizon to unlock it.

I'm at a loss of what to do now. I would think it would skip the activation since the verizon phone is unlocked and I can put my att sim in it to just work?

I really don't want to activate with the verizon sim that's in there.

Any ideas?

It’s not locked. It’s just an activation issue

A while back I read an iphone 7 forum that said Apple could clear it out of the system but you have to go to second level tech support or something like that.

I'm guessing you had no luck taking out the verizon sim before initial startup and replacing with your at&t sim...?

The Verizon iPhones are required to be unlocked for GSM. Both the Verizon and Sprint iPhones have both CDMA and GSM hardware and can work on CDMA and GSM. So an iPhone X from Verizon or Sprint can be used on T-Mobile and AT&T and other GSM carriers. A GSM only iPhone X (AT&T / T-Mobile) will work on Verizon but only on the GSM (LTE part of their network).

I'm up and running on the new iphone X. Process wasn't as easy as I thought. Spoke to Apple then ultimately Verizon. There might be other ways but I had to activate on Verizon then swap sim cards to AT&T. Verizon waived the activation/upgrade fee and returned that service to how it was pre-iphone activation. I don't know if this is a function of preorder instead of purchasing in store. For my iphone 7, I purchased a Sprint model in store and popped an AT&T sim in before initial start and it worked flawlessly.

Good luck all.

i'm trying to do the same (verizon phone, at&t sim) with the phone i picked up this morning. it keeps asking me to confirm my phone number--which is showing as my husband's verizon number, and NOT the number of the at&t sim that's currently in the phone. i'm leery to confirm it and continue as i don't want to screw up his phone service. suggestions?

i'll answer my own question for anyone else looking. just confirm it.

find asiqwdae's thread on the topic, or just thank him/her for this:

<<< Here is a important thing: They let u confirm ur number first(the one u use to order online), then it let u call Verizon to activate ur iPhone. Just ignore it, and click NEXT. then u got ur network on.>>>
