Hi there,

This has probably been asked a zillion times, but can I buy a base 21" and swap out the 5400rpm drive for an ssd of my choice? I dont want any spinning drives in my desktop. Also, is it the same for the 27"?

If you run the SSD externally, yes, then it's easy.
Replacing the actual drive INSIDE the iMac is not very easy though.

Same on both.
