Swap upgrade - tied to account holder?

My husband is doing the swap upgrade using his mother's account but when he plugged in the 3GS it showed his mother's number, wanted the last 4 of her SS# and is asking for her sim card to be inserted. What can he do to activate it under our account? He tried putting his old sim in but that isn't working either.

you can't do it from home
you have to go into an ATT corporate store (not an authorized reseller...even one that is called AT&T, check here to find a corporate store

at the store, tell the person who is assisting you that you're doing an upgrade swap. They should know what to do from there

you can absolutely do it from home. Verified this with ATT. She actually said to call ATT and do it, rather than go to a store, because often times the stores can get things confused.
