So swappa listed per their suggestion my iPhone 12 Pro Max at 980. Sure that’s high. Was offered a counter at 870…what are the fees that are taken out and how much will I lose. I will probably just stick with apple trade in I already set and preordered for tomorrow

That’s right. Ok. Well if he offers I’ll see what it runs. If not it’s going to apple

Call Apple and cancel the remaining of Apple care plan. Your balance on citizen will go down more. Also even if you pre ordered and will be returning old phone back to Apple you can still do the swappa sale later. I did that last year when I went from 11PM to 12PM. I didn’t send it back to Apple. Sold it on swappa. Removed Apple care as thats not transferable. That alone took off $118 off. Paid off loan. Sold it. Made $225.

I don’t have apple care on there. I’ve never added it to my phones

nice deal for you lol

I will just wait and see if someone buys it. I have a few weeks between getting the phone and needing to trade it if the sale falls through. Thanks for the advice

I'll never sell anything on swappa again after a buyer last year filed a chargeback on the pristine iPhone I sold him. I guess it's not specific to swappa but they didn't seem to care and there probably wasn't much they could do anyway.

That would severely piss me off if that happened. I’m going to list it locally as well

That’s crazy. You would think that the pictures you submitted in order to post the phone for sale would have been enough to contest the chargeback

Wow so what ended up happening? Did swappa take your money away and did the guy ship it back in the same condition?

Swappa doesn’t care. They’ll tell you to deal with PayPal. It’s a pain when stuff goes wrong on there.

I wasn’t sure where to sell my 12P this year. Apple trade in was $640 Swappa seemed way better around $800 but after dealing with fees and risking a chargeback it seems like it might be better to just eat the cost and trade in to Apple. I don’t use FB so marketplace isn’t an option, offer up seemed to be full of scams people selling 12 PM for $200

As annoying as it might sound, you may want to try Craigslist and OfferUp. I have had great success with those in the last few years, getting much better money out of my old phones than I would have gotten trading in with Apple.

I've had success on DeCluttr. I have sold phones to them in the past and usually get more than what Apple is offering. They also have 10% promo codes to add 10% to what they are offering. Check them out.

If anyone of you are on Reddit, I would suggest you take a look at the hardwareswap and Appleswap subreddits. These are amazing places to sell. Highly regulated. There are no fees outside of the PayPal fees. Reddit doesn’t take a piece of the pie like Swappa does on top of your PayPal fees.

I just sold a laptop there. I will definitely attempt to sell my iPhone there.

Can users still return or file charge back on there? I would hate to go through the hassle of shipping it to someone only to have a fake claim filed and deal with returning/charge backs

Yes, they use Paypal there. So technically, chargebacks can happen. The difference is that unlike Swappa, with hardwareswap or appleswap, the buyer chooses who they sell to. It's not like Swappa or eBay where any chargebacking douche can buy it. On Reddit, the person has to PM you and you have a private conversation with them before agreeing to sell to them. You can look into their Reddit history and trade history. Each subreddit keeps a history of confirmed trades and you can look at their history.

On top of there being less fees, this is actually another reason why I prefer to use Reddit instead of Swappa or eBay.

I see thanks for the recommendation, still trying to calculate if its worth it. Let’s say I sold 12P for $800 (it does have minor dents in frame, battery capacity is only at 91%). PayPal fees would be $23, shipping through FedEx slowest rate smallest package is around $32+ which would maybe net me around $745. Apple trade in is $640 so losing about $105, but way easier to just hand them my phone at the apple store and be done with it and not worry about charge backs either. Hmmm...this is tough I dont know if the convenience and less risk is worth $100.’

Also I’m not even sure it would sell at $800, I’m already seeing 12 PM in better conditions, some including apple care going for as low as $735-$790 on swappa and that’s before seller looses more in PayPal/swappa fees o_O

As others have said, Swappa doesn't do anything, they refer you to PayPal. PayPal doesn't care either. I submitted evidence, including the buyer giving me positive feedback on Swappa, a video I took of the phone working properly with no defects and then being boxed for shipping, pictures from every angle, etc. At the end of the day, none of this mattered. The scammer loser filed a chargeback saying the phone didn't work and million other things wrong with it that were clearly negated by the videos I sent. He got all of his money back and he kept the phone, refusing to send it back. My only course of action was to file a small claims case and to travel to Florida for that, which wasn't worth the cost. No lawyer would take up the case since the value was around $750. I'm guessing it wasn't the first time this scammer son of a bitch did that. I wish I believed in karma. Never selling online again after that, even with a 100% positive feedback rating on eBay since 1999.

WOW you didn’t even get the phone back either!? That’s insane and really sucks, I don’t think I will risk selling online unless it’s local pickup. Sorry that happened to you, I wonder if your carrier could blacklist the IMEI so the phone can’t be activated to a cellular network.

I was able to do that with T-Mobile but not with any other carrier nor with Apple. I'd say it's not worth the $100 to deal with selling it unless you do it locally for cash, as you said. Good luck!

I had an issue with PayPal not wanting to reconcile something similar and I filed a case with the better business bureau and they got me my money back. If it hasn’t been too too long you should give it a shot.

I'll look into that, thanks!

I sold my 5S on Swappa and documented everything with pictures (no video) and had it sent registered mail to the buyer who paid what I asked no problem. I spent the next 6 months wondering if I was going to get a dispute from PayPal for some random dumb reason from the buyer but luckily I didn't. I didn't like the idea that PayPal allows people to file disputes for 6 months, 1 month is fine but half a year? I'll never sell using PayPal anymore. Cash only using Craigslist, OfferUp is the way to go or I'll trade it in to Apple..
