Hi all, I've been searching for a little while now for the answer to this question but have yet to find a clear answer. Apologies if it's already been answered!

A member of my family will probably be getting an iPhone when the new version is released, but they have made it very clear that they wouldn't mind trading phones with me so that I can have the new one at no cost and they would use my current 3G. Gotta love family :D

My question is, since we will be on separate AT&T plans (although they will both have iPhone data, etc.) can we simply switch out our SIM cards or do we need to somehow notify AT&T of the change?

the problem is we don't know what the cost of the new data plan ( if there is a change ) will be. Assuming both plans are the same price, you will probably be able to swap sim cards without any questions asked. However the new plan might be cheaper/more expensive than the current 3G plan.

Until Apple/AT&t announces this, no one on this forum can give you a definitive answer

Why would a price difference affect this situation? I was under the impression that the plan followed the phone number (SIM card) and not the phone itself.

it doesnt matter if you switch phones b/c your sim is with your plan and all you are changing is phones and since the data plan for the iphones are the same then your fine and even if it wasnt it shouldnt matter your sim is like your plan put into various phones
