As I'm going on holiday. Will only want the phone for texts/pics/music. I have a cheap older Android phone which if lose/break/gets damaged/dropped/heat damaged won't care about. Whereas my iPhone 7+ £819 one I would.

Just take your phone and take better care of it, it is only a phone after all.

Personally, I don't see the point of spending so much on a phone and then not using it. If I want to take quick pics on holiday, I'd much rather use my 7+ than anything else.Just look after it like you normally would.

I think a lot of people have missed my op and just read on.

I do use my iPhone all the time, this will be a week away when I have a 100% more chance of losing it, it getting stolen, dropping it, getting wet, sand in it etc etc.

I don't baby it too much, but as it's a week away on holiday it will be less looked after as it will be in a hotel room, by pool, beach etc.

I'd rather lose a £75 Android than my £819 iPhone, I have insurance but it's excess is £100 anyway.

I have done the opposite in the past. I went and upgraded my phone to prepare for a vacation at overseas. I wanted my phone to be ready for all my needs during my memorable adventure.

Besides we make money so that we get to spend it on things and enjoy them. What is the point of buying a $1000 gadget that I don't get to use it when I'm on my vacation. I don't need a $1000 phone when I'm sitting in my office at work.

With what is going on in the name of "security" and the whole, your papers, your social media passwords, your contacts etc - having a disposable almost phone that is for travel and doesn't have Touch ID and all the rest might be perfect.

Amazon has some $60 Prime deals. I have always had a backup phone after one incident, and I also won't rely on just iCloud - a new security issue with man-in-middle, but patched (why you really need phones that are current on security - the Blackberry DTEK60 for me so far as kept monthly-ish security).

Lack of access to iCloud while travelling might be a bonus. Google Chrome syncs bookmarks (I don't like the way Safari handles it, end up being a dump thta is a unorganized mess of everything).

I would be worried using Android device where it is running something older than 6.01.

Most of my most memorable photos that I've taken have been on holiday/vacation with my iPhone. I'm a hobbyist photographer, so leaving the iPhone at home wouldn't fly with me.

I'd love to hear how your usage of that burner phone went during your holiday. Hope it goes well!

Thanks for your comments, someone agrees at last ha ha.

The Android I have hasn't got finger scanner or anything just standard swipe pattern, and also it's only got 6.0 on, no support for after now. What's specifically up with <6.0 please?

All what would be on would be my Google account, Google email, any pics, although I'll be syncing then to Dropbox everyday, contacts and that's it really.

I do have an old iPhone 5C but not sure if this is better or not, also not sure if it will mess up having my AppleID on 2 phones at once?

Thanks

OP: Yes, I switch between my iPhone and my Android phone frequently.

Just be sure to turn off iMessage and FaceTime on your iPhone and then power it off. If your other Apple devices are also connected to iMessage and/or FaceTime via your phone number, you should turn off iMessage and FaceTime on those, too. The alternative is that you don't, and your friends with iPhones will text you and you'll only be able to receive them on your Apple devices. You'll have to have iMessage turned off on all your devices that use your phone number if you want your Android phone to receive texts from current iPhone friends. (Note: this is what I think the situation is. I only have the one Apple iPhone, so I just turn off iMessage and FaceTime on it and power it off when swapping its SIM to my Android phone.)

As others noted, you'll end up with two devices with incompatible histories (texts, calls, photos, emails, etc.), but I assume you know this.

It's not really much of a deal - do what makes you comfortable during your trip. Enjoy!

OP, yes, use the 5C. It won't mess up your Apple ID at all to have two devices connected to it, and then when you get back everything will have synced beautifully. And if for some reason someone steals or robs you of the 5C or it falls in a pool or off a cliff, then no great loss, but you'll still come back to all your stuff synced to your 7. And if any of those unfortunate events were to happen, you could use Find My iPhone to disable/wipe the phone. Best of both worlds! Since you don't wish to take your 7, I'd take the 5C before I took an outdated Android and then had to deal with all the matching up of things later between iOS and Android.

As to what people are saying, don't take it too hard. I think most of us can see both sides of this, and it is commendable, even if highly inconvenient, that you want to protect your hard-earned device. After all, expensive phones don't grow on trees for the majority of people.

Have a great trip!

I would also use a $100'ish Android phone on vacation if i were u.

The chances of losing, getting robed, damaging it is much higher during vacation.

I've taken my iPhone to Peru, Germany, handful of states in the USA. I've gotten some amazing pictures and had the ability to communicate with my wife (in specific times she couldn't go because it was a business trip (Verizon Unlimited - $10/day to use your plan overseas)).

To each his/her own .... but....

It's kinda like buying a used car just because you're going to go to a part of California that isn't "as safe" as where you live. Hey, if it makes you happy, go for it. I use what I have - I'll drive my car where I need to go, and I'll use my phone wherever I need to use it.

The thing I could think of is if I worked with Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs - but then I'd probably just leave my phone in the car when working with him, lol.

Just so we're clear, I have no problem with the OP doing what they want to do - heck, I support it. :) I just couldn't see myself doing it.

Currently have iPhone, Mac, iPad etc. If I go on holiday, switch off my iPhone, and use that SIM in an android, what will I lose for the week away?

Will it just be the texts, and photos (as use iCloud photo library), but I could copy the photos when back home of any off Android phone.

I'm taking my iPad also so FaceTime will be on if needed, within WiFi or I can use personal hptspot. I'll lose the convenience of iMessage for a week, but could use WhatsApp.

I just don't want to take my iPhone 7 plus, whereas my iPad is older and also better for movies anyway, whereas my iPhone would just be for music and texts/calls.

Does anyone else do this? Any comments
Thanks
You'll lose iMessage.

Damn, if you're that worried about a phone that you don't want to even bring it with you, maybe you shouldn't have one in the first place. Just get insurance if you're that paranoid.

Please read thread. I have insurance. It's for a week. The difference is it's a beach/pool etc. I have a camera to take for pic
