So a product that no one has seen, that isn't even confirmed as real, is being down talked by a company that might be negatively impacted if said rumored product is a success

you cant compare phones to watches. Phone is something that everybody needs but watch is there just for esthetic reason.

Sure, more people need phones than watches, but they don't need phones that check email, surf the internet, etc. However, they choose to buy them. Who's to say they won't do the same with watches?

We don't even know what the supposed iWatch will do. I can think of many useful functions, and if it does them, I will buy one. iPads aren't a need either, but they seem to sell pretty well.

I don't know about any of you, but when I read "Hayek," I think of Salma! :)

Just like in 2006 when palm said apple had no chance to be successful with a phone.

I'm surprised you can't see a difference here. Phones were gaining an increasing amount of functionality. Watches have gone in the opposite direction. You have high end watches that are basically jewelry and others for specialized functions. What is better about wearing something on your wrist compared to what is available today, and would you really want such a thing as an additional item?

Just curious when Apple has said anything about a watch, let alone proclaiming it the next tech revolution or a replacement for a smartphone. Basically all we have is the media hyping a rumor, and then others making assumptions on Apple's thinking based on the unconfirmed rumor.

They could just be random comments that are being treated like press releases, or someone asked him what they thought of the rumor and he dismissed it. It's weird when these things are treated as official statements.

There will probably always be a market for expensive jewelry that goes on your wrist and tells time,

Al-u-mini-um with a curved glass screen that can tell time and so much rumors. And has the typical Apple 'overpriced' tag of like $300.

I think Apple has it covered. And could kill those boring watches that just tell time

Apple is never first to release a product..

There were MP3 players before the iPod.
There were smartphones before the iPhone.
There were tablets before the iPad.

Apple just perfects the product. (which them everyone else copies)

The iWatch will be no different.

Of course it can't replace a phone. Its a watch. Will never be able to do what a smartphone can.

You think Swatch is going anywhere? They're the largest watch company in the world, and they make some of the best watchs in the world. I highly doubt they'll go anywhere.

Remember RIM and Nokia? Or Sony in portable music before them?

I'm not saying it's going to happen this time, but your logic is flawed. If Swatch remains a player in the wrist-worn technology market after Apple enters it (if they do), it won't be because they are the largest watch company or because they make some of the best current watches in the world.

I recall clearly a bunch of companies including M$ saying that the iPad was not revolutionary and it will fail just before the iPad's launch. Just a few months later they were gasping to get on the money train with their own version.

Seems to me this is being picked up by the general media and tech press so they can report it and it fits in with their meme that Apple doesn't innovate, is out of ideas (a "smart" watch is so 2010), Steve wouldn't have approved blah blah blah. Basically using his comments to create a straw man (Apple thinks smart watches are the future) they knock down (sorry Apple, google glasses are "it", not your silly smart watch. Besides no one wears watches anymore anyway.)

Imagine someone went up to a hot dog vendor and asked him, "Apple are reportedly coming out with the iHotdog next year…what do you think?"

I would think his response would more likely be, "why would anyone replace their iPhone with a hotdog?", than "Apple cannot make a better hotdog than mine".

The company has been in contact with Apple for several years, said Hayek, speaking about "materials for products and so-called energy harvesting technology that would generate energy from physical movement."
I like this.

Iwatch for sure will take a chunk away from their sales.
So naturally he is worried!

But it wont be a replacement for those who like to wear a watch as jewelry!
But fir those who expect utility... It will !

Isn't Swatch just a trendy watch maker?

Aside from funky bands and cases have they added anything else to basic timekeeping since 1983 when they formed?

Does anyone else think that the media will crucify apple when this thing is unveiled? Regardless of how good it is? I'm scared.

Don’t like the small screen of a smart watch? Apple should introduce the, iGauntlet. Now, you can have a multi-touch screen that covers your entire forearm. With bendable, curved glass, it will comfortably wrap around your arm. Enjoy a screen size even bigger than your phone!

I'd buy it!

Few hundred million iphones users out there.
Even if 50% buy it as an extension of their phones utility... That will result in huge numbers in sales!
I believe the adoption by iphone users will even be higher than 50%

You could put an whole iPad in an iClock

My deja-vu sense is tingling...

Oh, yeah:

(Microsoft) CEO (Steve Balmer) does not believe that the a potential (iPhone) could replace the (Windows Phone), reports Bloomberg. At a press conference in Grenchen, Switzerland, (Balmer) implied that an Apple smart (phone) would be a flop because of its (lack of a physical keyboard).
Quote:
"Personally, I don't believe it's the next revolution," the chief of the largest (software business) said at a press conference on annual results in (Redmond, Washington). "Replacing (a smartphone) with an interactive (touchscreen device) is difficult. You can't (type properly)."
(Balmer) also mentioned that consumers buy (phones) as a (business) item and prefer (keyboards for email), a statement that may be off base considering the current popularity of smart (phones) like the (Windows Phone 7).
