I just wanted to share my experience with the iPhone X and a bit of opinion.

I went to Verizon in my little Podunk city at 9:15 AM (1.25H after opening) and walked in. They had a TON of employees working and just a couple of customers. They seemed to have plenty of iPhone X.

I got one at retail and, after declining all of the accessories over and over and over again, I walked out with it.

Took it to my wife (it was to be her phone) and began setting it up. Our mutual excitement turned to confusion then dismay when we couldn't figure out how to get it past the startup screen. Once it rolled back around to English (I wish I spoke an additional language), I saw it said "Swipe up to open" -- which I had been doing. Didn't work.

I took it back to Verizon and they had 4 or 5 people working on it, did soft resets, etc. As she's processing the exchange for a new one, it starts working. They sent me on my way. Back at the office beginning setup, stops working again. Bottom 1/2 of the screen not functional.

I ended up taking it back completely as that seemed to be enough to push my wife away. She was already leery of the hardware changes and realizing that there may be a scenario where something as critical as swiping up doesn't work... well, that was the end of that.

I'm a bit put off now 🙁 I was relatively excited for it, even though it was slated to be her phone. I figured I'd maybe get myself one eventually but now I'm just kind of bummed.

I understand that "things happen" and there's "bound to be a few bad apples" but the cost increase of this device over my 256GB 7+ from last year warrants BETTER QC in my opinion. Nobody wants to walk in and spend ~$1300 just to find it doesn't work. It was also my observation that the screen was a bit on the yellow side. No worse than my iPhone 5 screen was, but not nearly as bright white as my 7+

Alas I think this will be the first year since the 4 that we do not purchase a new iPhone. Further, I wonder how I will adapt as the prices get higher and these things get more and more fragile. I dislike the "finance all the things!" mentality that we have now... where does it end? Also, I prefer to not use a case and I've found that previous iPhone models have been pretty durable for me (4s, 5, 6, 7+ caseless) but these new ones appear to be more fragile than ever. I can afford the upfront cost but hose higher prices dictate higher cost of warranty, insurance, and/or parts/labor for fixes. For someone who prefers to go caseless, it's not just the upfront cost that'll get me.

If you've gotten this far, I'm sorry to be a "Debbie Downer" on launch day, but I wanted to share my experience and thoughts. I know there are many, many more people out there that are elated and I'm jealous of them this year.
