I was having trouble coming up with a concise title, so let me elaborate.

I'm using multiple displays, and whenever I drag my cursor from one monitor to the other, I still have to click on whatever application is shown on that monitor for it to gain focus.

Is there any way to have macOS automatically switch to the program on the monitor that the cursor is in? Without clicking on the program's window first?

I don't believe so. I have the same issue. Sometimes I think I'm on one application and start typing, just to realise I'm on another.

Switch to using Command and tab to change between running apps if it helps.

Ugh, there really should be a way to change this. Even a workaround or bodge. Annoyingly, BetterTouchTool has a setting that looks like exactly what I want, but it only applies to dragging and resizing windows:
