TheJadedMonkey is correct...the newer iPods come with USB, not firewire. Sorry for not catching that.
 
There's no reason you can't use your speaker system with an iMac.

Granted, if you have 5.1 surround sound, you might need to purchase
a different interface or an adapter, but the speaker system itself will work fine.

My daughter just got the new Logitech USB headset and is now having a blast
recording basic vocals in GarageBand, which means she can also audio chat
or create her own podcasts with ease.

So for 5.1 surround, I suppose I will just need to purchase the Griffin Firewave. The setup I will get is pretty much this:

24"
C2D 2.13 Ghz
2 GB ram
250 GB HD
256 MB Vid. card

I will eventually purchase Logitech's mouse/keyboard combo, and the firewave. Oh yes, and MS Office for Mac as well. Then it's all set! *Counts down until MWSF!*
