The Samsung is impressive for the money -- $179. Twice the RAM of the iPhone 7 (4GB vs 2GB) and four times the storage (128 vs 32).
The Samsung cpu is 32 percent faster in single core. And it runs the current Android operating system, while the iPhone is capped at iOS 15.x.
I did consider the iPhone 17e briefly but it costs three times what the A17 costs.
edit: What I like about the A17 is the value-per-dollar and the fact that it runs current software.
iOS 15.8.x is a prettier OS and seems to be more thoughtfully designed, however.
For exampe, I'm not sure why Android has a "home screen" with a small selection of apps (they can be edited) that are sort of separate from all the other apps. All the other apps pop up with a swipe. Whereas on iOS 15 you can see everything by swiping among however many pages of apps there are.
The settings in iOS 15 seem more logical than those in Android 16.
I prefer the squared icons in iOS 15 to the more circle-ish icons on Android.
I like how I can see detail RAM use information in Android.
I like the Samsung TV feature ... wow.
The size of the iPhone 7 is superior to that of the overly huge A17 (which is similar to the iPhone 17 size.) Why are phones so big. Ideal size is iPhone 5.
Icons for battery and wifi (at top of display) are nicer on iOS 15.
These my initial thoughts. Until today I'd only used Android briefly on store display models. Android seems to be totally usable. And for $400 less than iPhone 17e, I can deal with the quirks.
