Right now I am testing the higher performance on graphics. But when I am doing normal things such as using firefox as I speak, the cpu is at 54 to 60c. Is this normal? I did a screenshot on istat so you can see for yourself.

Completely normal. Range from 40* to 80*C, then 81*C to 89*C is considered somewhat high but still within the normal if you are doing many things and running "heavy" apps.
NOT normal would be something like 90*C to 100*C. Unless you are over clocking or doing something really intensive.

I'm experiencing the same thing. In fact, this is really the first time I've used the 9600GT for anything not graphic intense and I'm noticing that mine is hovering at around 60c.
Edit: I believe yours is the 256mb card while I have the 512mb card... I wonder if that could be the cause for the marginal difference (mine is also on a zalman notebook cooler).
It's completely normal. The 9600 on my UMBP runs around 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the 9400 (usually mid 50 degrees C to 60 degrees C with nothing too intensive).
