about that suggested 7200rpm hd upgrade - will the battery still last for 4-5 hours with faster drive ?
what 7200rpm drive is the most suitable for i-book 12' ?
thanks for all that answering me :)

I just contacted Apple reseller and it seems like they dont have any discounts for students  how come ? they dont have any answer for that - they told me to accept it as it is.
Is there any place at apple.com i can complain about that ?
Is there anything at all I can do about it ? Its very important for me... Because without the discount the price here is 1450$ for base configuration of i-book 12' and that is too much imho.

So sad! :( Did you try to see if the Apple online store has a school site for your school, even though you're not in the states? Or alternatively, does your school have some kind of computer sales office or IT helpdesk? They may know something the Apple store doesn't....

about Notebook HD

i sold my ibook to be able to purchase a g5 but i ll get an ibook again in future.

i sell x86 notebooks part time

afaik the hd in the ibook is a normal 2.5" harddisk.

take the one out and place in the 60gb 7200RPM from HITACHI,

got 3 years warrenty, better hit protection than the previous versions (if your notebook falls down and all that), generates less heat and uses less power...

its very expensive - but very good - normal retail is about 200-350 EUR.

nothing, in my country Apple got one reseller and that reseller suck ( bad support, high prices, no discounts at all, 30 day shipment on all products )

I think the heat problem is limited to powerbooks, because they are metal and so they conduct heat too well. :) I can also say that the iBook 12" does not heat up too much.

they both release about the same amount of heat. you feel it on the powerbook because its metal, allowing the heat to actually escape. the plastic traps more heat inside, and you wouldnt feel it as much.

someone just offered me powerbook 12' Rev A with 128ram 40gb hdd 867mhz for 1500$ warranty till July.
worth buying over i-book 12' G4 ?
i-book G4 will cost me 1477$ from reseller without any addons
Powerbook will cost me 1500$

what shall i do ? a lil worried about heat issues in Rev A - can anyone comment on this ?

BTW, XP is fast at booting up but then runs slowly for the first 3-4 minutes (at least on my new Dell at home - try to open up 'My Computer' and it takes at least 2 minutes). I assume that it's faster to the desktop, but then cheats because it has to load everything up in the background then. Just my guess though.

The cheating you describe is probably the computer having to load NOT only the startup programs, but also the temp file and prefetch folder (which are sometimes clogged full). Both of these should be cleared regularly otherwise you'll see that 2-3 minute delay. Also having more than 4-5 things in the taskbar on the bottom right will certainly slow you down. Virus scanners/acrobat readers/matlab servers will also take huge chunks out of the memory (and involve themselves in the startup time as well).

I presume OSX has a way to clean up similar folders? Or it doesn't use it at all (temp/prefetch) folders?
