Switching between 30p / 60i on the same project

I've never shot in 30p, but my old HC90 had simulated 30p (which had a funky strobe look to it). I'm weighing out whether to get the HV30 or HC9. When is it better to shoot in 30p and when is it better to use 60i. And can you switch between the 2 on the same project if you edit in iMovie (ie. day = 60i and night = 30p)?
