Switching display with software

Hi all,

Is there a way to switch between imac screen and the external monitor I hooked up? I imagined a tool resides on the menu bar that lets you quickly enable 2 screens and back to one will be handy.

Wondering if such tool exists? Thanks.

You mean re-creating the effect of plugging in and pulling the display adapter from the iMac?

You can move the Menu Bar from the iMac's display to the external display via System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.

Yup, exactly, and if possible to also have the option of only using the imac screen while the external is still plugged in but switched off.

Well the second part is easy. If you turn the external off then your iMac will pretend there is no external at all.
