I got a 8 plus recently, could afford a xr/xs but prefer touch id and no notch
An 8 Plus is still a first class phone. It’s still more powerful than any other non-Apple phone, has a camera easily equal to competitive flagships now, has a great screen, wireless charging, and Touch ID is still great, and many prefer it. If I didn’t have my 7 Plus, I’d have bought the 8 Plus already. For me, the XR will be a nice upgrade in many areas with only a few compromises.

Yea all true, loving this phone will try keep it for a couple years at least.
Loving the a11 its a great chip, it’s unbelievable how far ahead Apple’s chip designs are.

Well said. When I owned the 7 Plus, it was probably one of my favorite all-time iPhones that I ever owned, I think the 8 is the most mature version, even adding more features.

I just realized I can still pick up a new iPhone X 256GB through Verizon for $999 vs the 128GB XR for $799. I’ll get $320 for trading my 7 Plus. Wondering if the X makes more sense. Processor speeds are neglible, cameras are a wash since the new XR has a better sensor but the X has the extra lens. The X also has 3D Touch. What would you guys do?

$999 for a 256 X isnt even a deal.

You can find it cheaper second hand and probably still with warranty $700-800 on something like swappa

Yeah and I just checked again and it’s not $999, it’s $1049. The XR is definitely worth $250 less than a X, even with the smaller storage. I’m going with a black or Red XR.

I have a 7 Plus (which is very good) but I think it's time for something new.

Honestly I think the iPhone XR is the best iPhone this year. Plus I've drawn the line at $750, I'm not going to give Apple $1000+ for an iPhone (much less the $1100+ they want for an X Max, which would be the true replacement) even though I sort of liked the Xs Max because I don't want them to get away with these prices.

Comparing both of them, the only disadvantage seems to be the absence of the portrait camera. If I used this feature more than 10 times over the last 2 years I'd be surprised.

Am I missing anything here? to those who made the switch, do you miss the portrait camera that much?

Hihi, I too came from a iPhone 7 plus to the XR and honestly find the portrait mode more useable on the XR.

Typical everyday scenarios such as taking a portrait shot of my wife while she is seating in the front seat next to me in the car is now possible. When as on the iPhone 7 plus I was always asked to move further back.

I can also now take useable portrait shots in low light condition with the XR, which is almost every other restaurant we dine at. Many portrait shot on the 7 plus were ruin as the lighting was too dim and the pictures turn out too grainy.

The big drawback is of course taking portrait of non human subjects which can easily be address with a 3rd party app from the app store.

A portrait of an eraser that I bought at Daiso.

Have you checked out an XS in person at the Apple Store?

I almost got an X many times over the past year but I never got around to doing not just because of the price but because the screen is smaller than the Plus. It's narrower, and in Safari the notch area is useless, so it's even smaller.

The XR's screen is a lot larger than the Plus'.

The X will feel more premium, but the XR will have the larger screen, a battery that lasts for ages, and that's $200 you can use for something else.

Yup it should last several more years at least.

It's fast and arguably has a better screen than the XR.

I would've loved to go with the XR for the smaller size and lack of bezels.

I upgraded to the XR this year after having the 7 Plus. I really like the XR and I was able to give my husband my iPhone 7 Plus. My husband buys the cheapest Android phones he can and complains when they don't work. The iPhone 7 Plus was a huge upgrade for him and he really likes it.

Well the deed is done. I made a 4.0 this semester and celebrated it with trading in my beloved black 7 Plus for a black XR. So far, I’m loving it. Am missing 3D Touch in several spots but otherwise, it feels like a big upgrade.

The screen is great. Seems a little more vibrant than my 7 Plus and looks just as sharp over all. I’m impressed with it.

On Face ID- I have my set to raise to wake so I’ve found unlocking my phone basically every bit as fast as Touch ID. That surprised me. I lift my phone to my face and swipe up in one motion and that seems to be as fast as Touch ID overall.

The Portrait Mode is definitely better and more useful in the few pics I’ve gotten so far. I miss having a real zoom but otherwise the camera is awesome. I think the XR is the hidden gem for 2018 in the iPhone lineup.

Question for you guys. Have you run Geekbench on your XRs? I ran it on mine and my highest score was 11,071, and usually around 10,700-10,800 most runs, and the phone states 2.75GB of RAM. I remember my 7 Plus had 2.98GB of RAM so was surprised to see it lower than that. Are these both normal scores? Just curious. No complaints about the phone.

Hi Guru,

Grats on your test scores and also your new iPhone XR.

It’s in that ball park, depending on the temperature of your A12 chip, which can be affected by your usage and also how hot it is that day. Benchmarking it continually will cause the results to drop. I’ll snapshot a report for you, noted that the temperature is pretty cool where I am.

Hey thanks so much. Great phone and I’m enjoying it. I attached my benchmark above. Something may be off with my phone or the app because I ran the benchmark first thing in the morning and I got the score above. It’s 1300 points off.

Edit: I ran it again and got a little over 11,000 so I wonder if it’s the app more than the phone. Either way the phone is blitzing fast.

Fate solved this for me. My 7 Plus just fell behind my bed and the glass is in pieces.

Hope I don't regret getting a new phone instead of just fixing my old one...

i dont think you will (I cant help but continuously see it as like if the Plus and X had a baby, barring dual cameras, and max being the supersized X of course), but if you do, i think there's an extended holiday return policy to properly vet it out

If you used 3D Touch a lot, you will miss that, but bear in mind, Haptic Touch, while not as good, does help and Apple is increasing the functionality. Otherwise, you won't look back. The XR feels like a much bigger upgrade than I even thought. Part of it is the new experience with the all new gesture based interface. You'll also notice the camera is a major upgrade. Plus the A12 is hands down a beast. Everything is incredibly fluid and fast.

I recently went between the XR to 8+ and then back to the XR. It's simply a better phone for me. The screen is better, gesture navigation is much better, and the camera is a lot nicer as well. Speakers are also better, and the XR has a smaller footprint. The 8+ is a nice phone, but when the difference between the 2 is only 50 dollars, the XR was the easy choice. Also the 8+ had a really good battery but somehow the XR destroyed it. I was getting a full 2 days out of the 8+ and I can get 2.5 to 3 days of normal usage out of my XR (I leave my phone in battery saving mode btw).

As far as portraits go, the XR takes them beautifully. There's no such thing as a portrait of a dog or jar of mayonnaise. The word "portrait" literally means picture/painting of a person. A portrait of a dog is a picture, and the XR takes pictures just fine.

Just got back from the apple store. Indeed the Xr seems to be the best size for Plus users (The X seems to be small for me, the XS Max was a little bit excessive).

326 ppi vs 401 ppi makes zero difference to me.

Yeah sure the XS Max is the best but there’s absolutely no way I’m paying what Apple’s asking.

Congratulations! Enjoy your Xr. I traded in my 8+ for the Black Xr and I love it.

Congrats. I feel the XR was a larger upgrade from the 7 Plus than I was anticipating. IMHO, the XS Max is nowhere near worth paying $450+ more.

Late to the thread but just saw i can trade my 7+ for the XR & receive a $300 credit, hmmmm .......

Any idea how long the trade in program last’s & any new feedback from folks that traded in 7+’s?

What app did you use to take this shot? I downloaded Halide and it’s ok. Really needs a lot of light to seemingly get decent bokeh effect. This shot looks great tho.
