Hmm. So the black suffers from more visible fingerprints, and the white suffers from more visible cracks.

You can have some cracks, or you can have some fingerprints. But which one's better?

There's only one way to find out....

the only thing I've come to notice...with me having the white and my husband having the black version...is this:
The black iphone when put in an a semi-transparent case...the apple logo 'pops' more. If you like the apple logo and like people to see it...stick with the black.
If you like the subdued look of the white version...then by all means go for it.

The white, imo...is cleaner looking...overall.

But I also agree with the majority of the thread...this topic is WAY overplayed.
Use the search next time...there are PLENTY of threads on this topic.

The black phones actually crack more than the white, you just cant see it on the black. At least with white you can see them and then exchange your phone. I have had 8 white phones over the last year (exchanged for one reason or another) and I have never had one with cracks.

8? Either you're really rough with your phone or its a POS (I don't own an iphone yet, so I can't say). I hope my purchase wasn't a bad idea. I got a white one btw.

I have noticed the men I work with all have Black and the ladies all have white. I guess we guys take the black because black dont crack......lol

I am not rough on it at all... bad reception, take it back. Bad battery, take it back. One would not connect to wifi at all. One dropped calls all the time, etc, etc. Im close to several apple stores so it is no big deal, they run a diagnostic and if it doesnt pass, they replace it.

Half the reason I skipped the 3G when it came out was the plastic back. It screamed out 'drop in quality' and I saw the problems coming. I was hoping the next one would return to metal with plastic only for the antenna, but alas, it's not to be. I think our answer is to stuff it in one of those rubber sleeves you can get and be done with it.

I switched from the original iPhone to the white iPhone 3G as a throwback to the old school iPods and I loved it :D. In fact, my pre-ordered 32GB iPhone 3G S is white as well!

Oh wow, that sucks, and even worries me more. All eight were due to faulty hardware? Damn.

I'm about 50 minutes from the closest apple store. I guess AT&T doesn't help as much?

Hopefully they addressed the cracking issues for the 3G S and choosing a color will be more about your personal preference rather than personal fear.
