I'm still on the market for an audio interface. MOTU's new 4pre intrigues me. Compact, 4 mic pre's, affordable. I'm thinking that MOTU's Digital Performer may have better long-term support than Apple's Logic. I get this sinking feeling like Apple is going to leave the DAW business.

I think you'd regret not spending the extra $100 for the 8pre with the added flexibility that would afford you. I'm a big MOTU fan. I've used the 896HD and an HD192 in my basement studio with Logic Pro and Cubase without any issues. People do swear by the Apogee devices, but they are so expensive for the limited number of inputs. I'd be really aggravated swapping out mics and synth cables and guitar cables all the time. I love just being able to leave all my synth, mics and guitars plugged into my interface and not having to monkey around too much to just sit down and record something.

Thanks for the advice. Of course you're right. I have to resist my tendency toward small, compact, portable techno gear. The 8pre isn't that big for what it provides. Needless to say, I haven't taken the plunge yet. Soon, hopefully.

Making this transition just got easier as has made Logic Pro available on the Mac App Store for $199.99. I wonder if other DAW manufacturers will follow suit.

It's the other way around. I think Apple had to reduce the price because other DAWs are getting cheap. I think Logic's biggest competitors are the free ones you get bundled with hardware.
