Do I have to call AT&T if I want to switch my phone (even if it is temporary)?

My friend gives me his AT&T Samsung Focus to play for a week, but when I insert my sim card, all I can access is voice but not the data. So if I call AT&T and have them "activate" my new phone, will that mess up my plan? (I currently still have the grandfather unlimited data plan)

Well, it looks like you already swapped the SIM.
The reason data isn't working is because there's a special data plan for iPhones/Blackberries/others. Call AT&T, and tell them you want to keep the unlimited plan, but you just want it to work with the phone you have. When you give the phone back, just call them up again, tell them you want to retain your unlimited plan, but you need it to work with the iPHone.

Yes, it will mess up your plan. You will lose the unlimited iPhone plan for the regular smartphone plan and if you switch back you will not get the unlimited back. I switch and tried to go back and that is what happened.
