It should work regardless of how the phone is acquired. After activation you go back into your own online account and get the offer fulfilled. The referral comes from a current phone holder directly through ATT.

I am pretty sure the email address will have to match. All that is required is a first name and email. I think it must be the latter that ties the referral into the actual account. I am not positive, but think that is how it all works. Hope that helps.
