Since AT&T's FAQ doesn't really answer my question, could someone explain how this referral stuff works? I opened a new account with AT&T and picked up an iPhone on Friday, would I still be capable of taking part in the referral program as a new/referred customer?

Do you have to get the phone from an authorized retailer?

Actually I'm very surprised at the lack of interest in this program. I know that in the age of spam and scam and Nigerian money scams it's very easy to get jaded. Honestly though?

If you bought a new iPhone 3G and you weren't an AT&T customer before? Your eligible. Just drop a PM with your name and an email address.

It's really that simple. No strings attached. No scams.
