switching to Thunderbird help

My wife used Outlook 2011 for her mail but wanted to switch to Thunderbird. I did all the work for her but there is 1 problem I can't solve.
Her email is a gmail address setup as pop. When she deleted a message from her ipad it also got deleted from Outlooks inbox. That saved her the trouble of having to also delete it from her computer.
I can't figure out how to do this in TB. When she deletes a message from her ipad it still stays in the TB inbox.

Any ideas?

Can the gmail account not be switched to IMAP? I used to use POP3 for all my mail but switched so that my devices would stay in sync.

By the way. If you have not yet done so. You can use the gContactSync addon to keep your Google Contacts in Sync with Thunderbird.
