solution

Go to spotlight and turn your iPhone in to landscape and back. Now Swype will apere avery time in spotlight.

Still not a single problem on 8.1.1 iPhone 6 for me.

Only problem is spotlight. This happened twice. Other than spotlight, everything is perfect.

This.

Happens at least once a day, mostly in iMessage and Contacts.

I have to kill iMessage to get it to work again.
Must be very complicated since Apple still hasn't fixed it yet.
Or my cynical self thinks, Apple thinks... you don't like it, use our keyboards!

As long as people are fighting each other to be the first to buy their new products the second they become available and there after, causing them to be the most valuable company out there, they aren't going to concern themselves over 3rd party keyboard issues.

Until the revenue decreases measurable this is how it will be.

So, um, you think Apple ties each bug fix to tangible loss of revenue that can be tied to that specific feature? Seriously?

Realistically, look at how many things people complain about on these forums. Some of them serious functional issues, and many of them regressions from previous releases. If you're Apple, and you're trying to prioritize bugs, are you going to assign top priority to the bug that:
- is not a regression, so nothing anyone was relying on prior to iOS 8.
- is mostly a niche, power-user feature.

It would sure be nice to get these issues fixed, and they are definitely working on it. iOS 8.3 fixes some of the problems, and future releases will surely fix more.

Personally, I think they should have waited until iOS 9 to introduce third-party keyboards, since the API was definitely not quite ready for prime-time, but what's done is done, and it will get better. There is no grand conspiracy here.

The API could be not quite ready, but I'm using third party keyboards since day one with great satisfaction. Actually Swype allows me to write better and faster.... even in this very moment.

Oh, I know they can be super useful, I just don't like seeing things in such an unfinished state in production software.

It's not only Apple.
A few minutes ago I was angry about Swype on my nexus trying to post something in Italian on a very famous sports website....
Third party keyboards sucks also on Android, despite what Android supporters are saying.
I hope Apple will improve the experience with better API...

----------

Why do you think Apple resisted allowing them for so long?

CORRECT.
People vocally asked for third party keyboards and this is what we have got.

I occasionally have a problem when switching between notes and safari where the keyboard just disappears, or it becomes unresponsive. I got so used to swiping that I put up with it though, it feels so slow whenever I have to go back to pecking.

I tried posting a reply here on the forums today and couldn't because my keyboard would not appear. Same old Swype bug that appears in spotlight.

Am I the only one thinking Apple charged something in third keyboards support API in iOS 8.2 ?
My Swype utilization experience improved quite a lot since iOS 8.2

They seem to be making small tweaks every release, but there's rather a long way to go.

It has improved for me too, but crashes out from time to time. It's still frustrating.

I'm on the 8.3 public beta. Still getting weird behavior. Couple of times per day the keyboard won't appear, often with spotlight but also messages and mail. I used to restart to get it working again. However, I've found that if I double tap the home button and quit any app that uses the keyboard, it will reappear for me.

The bug I can't figure out is where it seems like the Swype keyboard won't even load. Couple of times per day when I go to Messages, the default iOS keyboard appears. I'm not even given an option to load alternate keyboards. To be clear, this is not when I'm entering secure info like usernames or passwords.

Going back to the main list of message threads and then returning to the one you are interested in will generally fix this. No way to keep it from happening periodically though.
