I just set up a new iPad from a backup of and old one and then changed the name of the new one, but iCloud lists the new iPad as having the same name as the old one.

I know I can fix this by signing out of iCloud and back in again, but it seems like I shouldn’t have to do that. Especially since it will require me to basically set up everything again.

Does anyone know how to force syncing the device rename to iCloud?

From my experience it can take some time to automatically update the device name.

Yep, it looks like it synced about an hour later.

It didn’t sync with respect to the name that shows up under SMS forwarding for iMessage, but toggling that off and on on my iPhone fixed that.

does changing the name on an iPad require you log out of iCloud?
on an iPhone it doesn't (sorry, i don't have an iPad).

My iCloud settings will always reflect the new name, it initially will pick up the name of the device from whose backup I’m restoring, pretty quickly. The one that never does is iTunes, so on that setting I do sign out and then back in after changing the name and it gets picked up right away. iCloud and Manage Your Apple ID pick it up without any intervention from me.
