sync texts between macbook and iPhone

I find that sync of texts (i.e. Messages app) between my macbook and iPhone is not reliable. Both are running the latest version of their respective OS's. Are there some settings that I need to check? Is this a known issue? This has been going on for a while now (i.e. it was unreliable even with prior versions of macOS and iOS).
