Sync with movies & music on nas?

I can't seem to find an answer to this question. I will be moving all of my music and movies from my iTunes on a MBP to a network drive. My question is, when I sync the iPhone with the MBP and want to change music will it allow the transfer from the nas to the phone?
In other words, in order to sync music does it have to be stored on the local drive?

that will work. I do it. The thing is that you need your NAS to be awake before opening itunes. Otherwise, itunes won't find your library.
