Sync'd phone number changes format

Phone numbers in Address book on the desktop are in format (123) 456-7890.
When sync'd to iPhone become 123/4567890. The / prevents numbers from being recognized as phone numbers using BMW bluetooth system. I have resync'd (through iTunes) instructing all contact info to be replaced, but this was unsuccessful, numbers still show up as 123/.....
Any ideas how to get numbers on iPhone in same format as desktop (123)... ?

update your phone, maybe. Are you running 2.2.1? I've heard that it addresses this issue.
