A new item appeared in my iPad storage listing called "synced storage". It takes up nearly 8gb and reduces on device available storage. Is anyone else seeing the same entry and how might one get rid of it? I do not see the same entry on my iPhone which is also running the same beta.

Yes I have the same thing. I downloaded via itunes about 29gb is music and that save amount now appears twice. Once add music and once as synced storage.

I do not know how to remove the sync storage. Sorry

Thank you for your post and for letting me know you are seeing similar things. I agree it does seem like it is double counting/storing. I did a feedback submission, so hopefully it will get resolved in future update. I did read that some are experiencing large increases in app storage usage, maybe it is related.

Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone with this issue

I see this now as well on my iPhone (I’m running the public beta).

I recently downloaded/synced my music library to my phone for offline listening and both my music and this “synced content” are taking up roughly 49GB (the amounts aren’t exactly the same).

I'm going to see if I can somehow fix this issue tomorrow. If not, gonna have to unsync my music until Apple fixes it.

Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm at my wits end as I have little to no storage left and am close to doing a clean install on the phone 😩

I am having this issue on iOS 17 which I just installed. Storage is 66 GB of synced content.

I'm on a small 64GB and it was hard enough getting the upgrade on. went from 4GB free to nothing very quickly.

I theorize if I remove all the music from the phone and then resync it *might* not double count any more?

OK so I removed all my music. THis sent the Music and Synced content figures both down to basically 0.

I resynced. Once more both are showing at the same amount within 1%. Both show to be using a similar block of space on the graphic at the top. The total space free does seem to suggest it is double counting.

So I took the unusual step of asking Apple support. Basically it's a known issue and they're already looking into it.
However in some good news i can 100% confirm the data isn't stored twice - deleting my 4GB of music removed both 4GB of music and 4GB of synced content.

It didn't free up 8GB so I think it's just being misreported - what that will do when it hits "full" I'm not sure

I also just got off the phone with Apple Support - use the Support app to initiate a ticket - and was told it's getting elevated to engineering. The rep told me only a few calls have come in so far. Either folks don't realize this is an issue or don't use iTunes to sync or backup their phones. But if you are having the same problem, please contact support to they can see this is a wide spread issue.

That’s not the case with me. When I deleted my music (~33GB) it freed up 55GB of storage, and added on 10GB to System Data. It’s definitely duplicating data storage as well.

Are you sure it didn’t tack those extra 4GB into System Data?

Thanks Gents for the updates.

Dave I'm confused about your 8gb of data. You degreed the 4gb of music. That then removed the 4gb syced data. But the storage data was still showing you were minus 8gb of storage?

I'll try to clear up the confusion.

I was at 62GB in use with it showing as using 4GB of music and 4GB of synced content. Both 4GB blocks showed in the top graph.

I deleted all music and this deleted the 4GB of music and 4GB of synced content. My total in use storage dropped to 58 not 54.

I put the music back and it went back to 62 but once more shows 4GB of music and 4GB of synced content.

That seems to contradict what NeoSe7en reported above but given for me its a small amount of data it might just be a bit messed up so I wouldn't take it as gospel.

It'll be more obvious with the 20GB+ of music that many people have.

Thanks for clarifying. I think we just need a bigger sample pool here but sadly, we’re a dying breed.

Before I deleted the Music app from my iPhone 14 Pro, I had 18.73gb of music, 18.56gb of synced content, and I had 56.74gb storage free. After I deleted the app, all synced content disappeared from my iPhone and I had 86.43gb storage free. When I synced music again, both music and synced content were added back in and I had 55.14gb storage free (I deleted some other stuff from my phone in the interim, which accounts for the difference of 56.74gb before and 55.14gb after). Synced content definitely appears to be a double entry for my music.

Has anyone with this issue completely reset their phones and restore from a backup? I may try with the backup I made via iTunes before I updated to 17. No idea if that would help, though.

I’m getting the 15 Pro on Friday. I’ll see if this issue reoccurs on the new phone after restoring from a backup and update this thread.

I'm considering it. Really don't fancy doing this so will hold out for another fw update. If after that it's not fixed, I'll go through the tortuous process

I received a reply from my tech support rep who said she would be contacting me for more info. Here is what she wrote:

I received a response from our site support engineers (SSE). There are some logs that I’ll need to get from the device. If possible, we’d need to speak on a different phone. Next, we’d need a Mac or a Windows PC in order to gather some of that information.

So I am waiting for a call from her. At least there may be some light at the end of the tunnel.

That’s kind of annoying that they’re making you jump through all of those hoops. The problem should be easily reproducible on their end.
